Yes & No.

Now to expand you shouldn't play mtt's to "just get into the money", but that topic has already been beaten to death in other threads.

Pokerstars has very large field mtt's and it often takes a couple of hours to get itm once late reg ends so you would have to do more than just be a nit and win one or two pots unless they are monster pots. Late reg isn't always a bad thing though in the well structured non-turbo mtt's so some people choose to take advantage of it whether it be to save them some time playing tight in early blind levels or because they can't make it to the game when it initially starts.

If your concern is to just make it itm though I'd suggest you give sng's a try rather than mtt's since the time investment will be much lower for in some cases probably a better return from min cashing a sng than min cashing an mtt.

The only tournament where I have found it possible is $27 ZOOM PLO SCOOP event. Other then that you are going to have to put in work to cash.

I also think it's important to note that cashing is not the goal for long term profit. Winning is!

It would take some really strange(i.e. bad) tournament format to be able to late reg and just coast into the money. Late regging may increase your chances of getting in the money, but that's not really what you should be concerned with.

Your ROI is what really matters, and that's determined much more by your own skill rather then when you register. If you're a winning player when registering at the start, you'll be a winning player when registering as late as possible. If you're a losing player when registering at the start, registering later won't fix that.

I have already done it, but if u think about it, when you do something like it, u get back your investiment plus some cents. One time you lose, you need several times to recover money invested.

I don't play on pokerstars, but I know carbon has late registration most of their tournaments. 80 min for turbos, 140 min for regular.

I wouldn't say late registering makes it easier to make it to the money, and like bluff said, you shouldn't play MTT's just to make the money, but you do have to get pass less players. The downside to that is, depending on how late you register, the blinds will be pretty high compared to your stack. Also, you don't start on an even field like you would have if registered on time, so you might get on tables with huge chips stacks compared to yours, which could be a good/bad thing for you.

I personally prefer to late register only because I get bored easily when it comes to deep stack MTTs. I'd rather sit at a table with a 5K stack and blinds are 50/100-100/200 than when blinds are starting at 15-30, but that's just me. I like to start playing with an about average stack, try to pick up a lot of pots with steals/shoves/reshoves during the middle stages, which can be pretty easy sometimes.

Joining a tournament shorts tacked increases variance. You'll be forced to come from behind at least once early OR you'll have to dodge numerous beats with premium starting hands in multiway pots. That is, if you last long enough to get any. Usually if I late register it's because I don't have 8+ hrs to play a tournament. If I do that, I'm shoving a wide range early to try to get lucky or steal some blinds quickly.

It's better to register at the start of a tournament if you're serious about winning.

Late registration are good for those who often play the super/hyper turbo and familiar with push/fold mode but this way only variances dependent.

If you make the money with a small stack it's not like you're dead. You could still ride it up to win the tourney.

I'm a recreational micro stake player and if I sit at the computer with a tourney with 1 min left to late reg; I won't hesitate to register and work from there.

Generally you have to play a number of spots in which to cash but good for people who are happier playing 50bb poker or less. Each to their own

It depends on the size of the buy in. I would say, the lower the buy-in, the more acceptable it is to register late. The reason being that the first parts of the tournament can be all-in fests. This is especially true with lower buy-ins.

However, missing the all-in fests can also be a bad thing since it's typically an easy time to double/triple up if you play tightly.

Yeah, early stages of small stakes tournaments are gold. It can be frustrating if you're card dead and it's a shove fest, but so many people are willing to punt their stack to you when you finally get a hand.

If you want to stay in ITM , late registration is not an option , because the fields are huge and you will have to play push/fold .
I would advise you to play SnG , where the field is much lower.

As others have said ITT , I think it is always best to reg as soon as possible because you want to play the most hands vs the bad players. Early stages of mtts offer deep stacks with mostly bad players . Playing the early stages of mtts is one of the most valuable aspects of mtts imo . THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM OR IN THIS CASE THE FISH !

If you play well deep stacked, your taking away your advantage. And often times the weaker players are at the beginning at the tournament.

Why do things the harder way by stacking later in a tourney when you can get a few double ups early without too much stress?

When you restrict yourself to a shove/fold everytime you will fail more times than not. You want to avoid coin flips for as long as possible.

Maybe at some special tournaments, but not in general. Players for real money are not so stupid to bust out during late reg and close to ITM. Dont forget, that even if you are close to ITM (several players), you will have big issues to get there if all other players have 3x-4x your stack and blinds are high.

Anyway, e.g. at partypoker, there are often so called "Big Addon". There its best strategy to buy-in at last minute of late reg, and get add-on, which gives you much more chips per $. So you will be quite close to ITM with reasonable stack (still expect more then 1-2 pots, or many steals to get there).

This is starting off as a way above average discussion. Very impressive. Love cc.

The question you should ask yourself is, "If I register at the start and only play quality hands, am I likely to have a larger stack when late registration ends than I would if I registered at the end of late registration?". If the answer to that is no, then your next step should be to find out why.

If you start early you can somewhat build your stack. On the other hand if you register late you'll probably be on of the low stacks on your table. Don't forget that your goal is to win the tournament not cash out a few dollars and cents.

Many other factors can be included like how good you are and/or what type of game you play

Turbos

For the Turbo tournaments where you start with 3000 chips you get an hour of late registration. The latest you'll get is when the blinds are 125/250 or maybe one level above leaving you with 10-13bb. Then it takes about another 25-40 minutes to get in the money.
