Is this kind of tournament bad for my game?

Yo!

So, lately I've been playing local pub leagues that WPT (World Poker Tour) put on. The buy ins range from $30 with 2x $20 addons or $50 freezeout or $60 bounty!

First place offers cash plus a ticket to a satellite. This satellite will give a package (flights, accomodation and $3700? entry to the WPT Legends of Poker ME). I've won 1 ticket already, but every ticket you win adds 10k to your stack.

I'm wondering if playing these tournaments are actually good for my game though.
Heres why:

The structure is always 15minutes.

Stacks usually are about 20-30k depending.

Blinds start 25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
200/400
500/1000
1000/2000
2k/4k
5k/10k
10k/20k. (heads up usually ends at this level)

NO ANTES!!

People in these leagues also often chase draws (including gutshots) without taking into account their odds!

Another thing is you'll often see 10-12k sized pots at the 25/50 level because people think that because they're so deepstacked they can raise heaps.

To me, this seems like gambling but these tickets are just too good to pass up and usually the fields are about 20 people large.

whats peoples thoughts on these structures? I have zero intention of playing them once this satellite is done, because genuinely I do believe its making me a worse player. The only thing its doing good at is teaching me to read fish. (half decent players dont give off the reads these guys do).

FYI: the satellite is a 2day event with 30minute levels and still no antes, but the blinds also dont jump as much.

Well I can't say that I have a lot of live cash experience, but I think that if you're identifying how the structure is changing your play, you've already protected yourself against it hurting your overall game in the long run. It may feel like your game will be skewed in the future, but I would look at it as a good opportunity to compete for some really solid value, and leave it behind as soon as the satellites end. Good luck!

If you have local pub leagues then these are the structures they'll have. The tournaments are really hard to beat!

Although, we had Federico Butteroni come join us (Never forget your roots!) for a game once and he came 2nd so it does go to show that it's not entirely luck based in these tournaments.
