I just thought that I would share something that has been working really well for me as a Tournament reg. Ok, so we all know that the worst possible thing that can happen during play is to lose internet connection during a tournament. This could happen for a variety of reasons (Unpaid bill, equipment failure, drop in local bandwidth/reception, failure at the internet provider's site themselves or even just something silly like your ethernet or power cable coming loose from the router).
We've all been there, and it's the most frustrating thing that can happen to a player during a MTT/SNG, especially at the bubble stage or large payout jumps near the final table. Players have literally lost thousands/millions of dollars from this happening. I have certainly been in this situation. Logging back in after solving the issue only to find myself blinded out or on such a short stack that it's basically over.
Well I've solved this problem, and here's what to do.
In all walks of technology (Telecoms, Electrics, Mechanical) backup systems are used which are totally separate systems to the main one in use. When these fail, a completely separate backup system (with no shared technology with the failed system) is activated to take over while the failed system is debugged and restored to working order. I use this same principle to protect my bankroll and winrate.
When I play Poker I have my normal broadband connection running which I pay a bill for and is 'Always on' connected to my computer via Ethernet. On the desk in front of me (within my arm's reach) is a totally separate 4G internet dongle fully topped up with unlimited broadband and already setup as a wifi connection on my machine. In the event of an unexpected network failure (Whether it is my fault or not) I instantly activate my 4G Backup which restores all my tables to full signal strength. This allows me to finish all of my tournaments and worry about what went wrong with the broadband at a later and much less critical time.
I have found this backup idea really successful and wanted to share it with the Poker community. I hope this solution helps you all too.
