Hello,

So played my weekly live game on Thursday, was short-stacked twice but eventually made it to the bubble with a strong chip lead..

I made a marginal call against the short stack and lost, leaving me in second place.. The stacks were roughly as follows...

Villain - 25k
Hero - 20k
Player 1 - 10k
Short stack - 5k

I'm BB, villain is SB, action is folded to SB who cold-shoves all in on me. I wake up with QQ.

I've been discussing this with various poker friends and am getting mixed feedback with the validity of the SB shove in hindsight.

My question is, in your opinions, what range should the chip leader be shoving on the SB against BB who has 80% of his chip stack?

Cheers all [emoji1303]

Its a good shove, as it puts max pressure on you, and given the ICM youd have to fold AK there.

I would agree with BriceNice it is in fact a good shove even with the pressure.

I get why the SB does that.
It's on the bubble, so the BB will only call with premium hands.

Hi, I'm guessing from "forever blowing bubbles" you're from London. I normally play at the Empire in Leceister Square, any regular live MTT's in London you'd recommend?
Cheers

I'm not from London, but do know The West Ham song...

I appreciate the replies, but no one actually answered my question of what range someone should be making this play with..

I've got queens, so of course I call..

He shows A7 off suit, hits an ace on the flop and a 7 on the river...

Pretty gross in my opinion, but never mind, I guess seven times out of ten I have a massive chip lead after the hand and more than likely go on to win..

Just one of those days...

P.S. Surely whether or not it's a 'good shove' depends to some extent on the holding...

The correct range really depends on the what the blinds were at (how deep the effective stack is), but if there is a significant payout and high blinds/antes the shove can be profitable very wide since you should be calling extremely tight due to ICM concerns.

I don't think you made a bad play calling it off with QQ, that run-out is why you have a poker bankroll and play within its limitations.

Better luck to you! :D

The larger your stack is relative to others' stacks, the tighter you should become until you are heads-up. Once heads up, being tight is pointless.

Play to let others kill each other off or to kill people off in CLEAR ADVANTAGE scenarios.

Do not play for first place, always play with the mentality of second place being the goal because heads-up poker removes any call for passivity.

If you're trying to get under someone's skin, make it less obvious and then you actually will get under their skin.

I honestly couldn't tell if you were being serious - what you posted is the complete opposite of well known tournament strategy (even for beginners).

If that's your real opinion fine, but if I were you I'd spend a little more time on post quality over quantity in the future. Done tapping on the glass I guess, good luck to you!

That was a tough decision,and I don't blame calling with QQ,but it's pretty risky.
I think the range should be TT+ and AT+,since you have a pretty good change of getting a call from pocket pairs or KQ,KJ,so you'd be ahead.
In your situation,It wasn't a bad call, but you have to consoder that the chance of your opponent having an ace or a king is very high, and that puts you at risk in the bubble,so folding would be best there

Get big then sail through, that's the best tournament strategy there is.

While small you need to fight tooth and nail to cooler someone's premium hands with a mediocre hand drawing well as that's the only way you get them to pay you off.
