I play very tight in the early stages of tournaments except when given fantastic pot odds
... eg 78s in the BB with UTG raise and 5 callers... cant turn that down at 6:1.
There is very little to gain from playing loose early in a tournament, you very often start with 150/250+ bb and it is so early on there is little to gain and a lot (your tournament life) to lose, it doesn't really matter if you double up either in the first 5 minutes or the first hour (normal speed). Yes, you want to build as big a stack as possible, but why take unnecessary risks while a lot of others are playing loose? Open up mid game once the antes are in and the pots are worth playing.
Your going to have to double up like atleast 10-11 times in a tournament to make the final table, sometimes more, so whats the point in risking your tournament with a marginal hand in the first hour or two, when even a double up at this stage is often only 0.1 - 0.5% of a final table stack.
Hope that made sense lol and just my opinion.
