Ok if you have freeroll money, is smart to take a stab at a higher buy in tourney to up your bankroll every once in a while? I am up to almost $30 on one site. They have some $3 and 5$ tourneys that I can buy in. The tourneys have $1000 GTD so the pay out if you hit is pretty good. From a bankroll standpoint, is it OK to once in a while take a stab at these type tournaments?

Sometimes taking a shot might be ok, however it should never cripple a br if it doesn't go well and be sure that its not going to put you on tilt if you lose it and then make you wanna play another and another or bigger and bam goes the br.

I am sure many people take a shot from time to time, but on that note if following strict BRM they probably have it built into their br plan in regards to for example if following a 40bi brm for cash and you currently have 30bi for the next level up then you could take for example a 5bi shot at the next level whereby if you lose 5bi you go back to the original level at which even after loosing the 5bi for the level up you are still going to be well rolled for your existing level.

I would disclaim however as mentioned if loosing 5bi at the level above in a shot would possibly send you on tilt or to chase those losses then I would certainly not recommend it.

Perhaps it would be best if going to take a shot to do so at a lower varience game than an MTT, like maybe instead of the 5$ shot at an mtt maybe a 5$ stt where you have a much better chance to cash and have the shot payoff to some degree (granted won't be like binking a 1k tourny but still would well boost the br).

Most BR strategies say that BRM doesn't apply until you've built up $50-$100. I don't agree, but it's whatever works for you. I personally won't buy into anything more than 5% of my BR, and I stick with it. I'm also building all my BRs from FRs, so I understand how long it takes to build that money.

Most BRMs were written when even online you would only expect a $1 MTT or more, which is why you couldnt previously follow a BRM until $50 - $100, now adays you can buy in with as little as 10c so proper BRM can be achieved

it is very tempting to play such tourneys when you see the guaranteed money indeed, but it is not wise with such a bankroll.
applying tight bankroll management no matter what is wise. frustrating with a low BR but wiser.
if you follow tight BRM rules, like playing not more than 5% of your BR, when you loose you say : ok, i have been unlucky on this draw, I'll play another one, and I'll better focus and try to play better.
if you play a $3 thinking : afterall it's just the price of a coffee and maybe I can get the $1000, you are playing 10% of your BR and when you loose, you are more likely to go on tilt realizing you just lost 10% of your BR !! and you are more likely to play badly the next games as a consequence.

my 2 cents...

The only site I've seen where you can play anything but a hyper-turbo with 10c is PS, so for US players we do have to build up our rolls higher on most sites. I really miss those 10c and 25c sngs.

yeah i say why not! take a stab at the bigger buy in tournys every now and again. Then apply good bankroll management to a large bankroll when you hit.

WOW, I took a shot at a $300 GTD on BCP last night. I must say I will NEVER do that again. I did not realize that they leave the late registration open for 12 levels. It took three hours just to get out of late registration. People would shove and rebuy. Others were still joining 2 hours into it even though the blinds were up to 400/800. I did ok but I did not cash. :(

If your'e not prepared to re-buy or add on, I would skip the guarantees for awhile, most all of them have the re-buys.Double up s&g s are a good tool to bring up the BR.
