I was wondering whether or not it is worth using a HUD in SNG and MTTs? I mean the chances of playing the same opponent in other tourneys is very remote and usually I would be paying enough attention to the tourney to gather information on an opponents playing style. What are other people's opinions on this?

I always use a HUD for Tournaments. Some stats wont be very useful because they need a big sample to be reliable.
The ones I find most useful are Stack Size in BB, hands, VPIP, PFR, Call PF 2Bet, PF Limp, PF 3bet, fold to PF 3bet, F Cbet, fold to F Cbet, Fold to F 2bet, Steal, Resteal, fold to Steal and WtS. Aggression factor and All in equity can also be useful. The others that I use will not be that reliable with small hand samples.
Also taking notes is very important I think, and color labelling...

The HUD helps me a lot espacially when I play for three or four tables. for me it's easier to keep track of whats going on.

i just recently been using it and it has helped me going much deeper in tourneys. also it can help u keep an i on how your playing sometimes you may not think your really playing that many hands.

but you really are. from the hud and keep an i on when to switch it up the hud says your playing one style and you notice its been ;like that for a bit maybe swap styles

In a regular tournament it get's easily over a 100 hands and for the main stats that's already a nice sample.

Exactly! That's something I don't hear people mentioning a lot when they talk about HUDs. It's always about the stats of their opponents, but never about their own image. A HUD can definitely give yourself hints that e.g. you have been stealing too much and that there is a bigger chance of being called, especially when others use a HUD as well and see your way of playing in detail.

Oh my GAWD - YES! Totally worth it! Yeah, I always come across guys I have no history on, BUT I also always come across guys I have thousands of hands on. The more you play the more data you are collecting. Those 3 guys at my table that I only have a few hands on? Well I just hope they stay around long enough for me to collect more hands on them.
Just over this last weekend I was playing a guy that I hand several hundred hands on, but I didn't remember him at all. He leads out UTG and I have JJ in the middle - I 3 bet him and he tanks for a little bit and then shoves. I see this behavior quite a bit in these SitnGoes and it usually dictates a call - HOWEVER his HUD was showing me he was the tightest guy at the table besides me and not prone to 3-betting, let alone shoving. I folded and he showed AA. I responded "It could only be". I went on take 2nd in that one. If not for the HUD I would have been gone.

And I also collect the notes the software doles out on me to the other players to help figure out what they are thinking of me. It sure would be great if you could click on another players HUD and it would show the data of yourself in those common hands.

I think the problem with me is my sample sizes will be minuscule compared to yours. I will play 3 or 4 SNGs at a push each night, single tabled. I am a very casual, recreational poker players, in it for fun and not to make copious amounts of gains (or losses).

I found that when I started using HUDs in my freerolls it definitely helped a lot especially cause the same people play in these freerolls and I could get enough hands on them. remember you need like +- 70 hands in most cases for a true representation of a persons style of play.

My trial has ended though and I was wondering if there is any good free to use HUD software out there????

At that rate I think you will be surprised how quickly it will mount up. I mean that should pretty easily amount to over 4,000 hands a month.

Jivaro has a free subscription that shows VPIP, PFR and AFq. Its simple but helps when multitabling.

@tpc:

I think its pretty useful to have huds active in tourneys or sngs. U don't need that many hands for some stats (such as VPIP, PFR, fold to steal etc).

U shouldn't always trust the hud, but most times u'll have valuable info with their help

Probably because they actually pay attention to what is going on at the table.
