With a short stack it is easy, because it's all in or fold your hand. With a short stack calling a hand cripples your chips so you should instead go all in with it. It is that simple when your short stacked.

With a short stack not easy to slow play.
All-in or fold is a better choice.

As mentioned already, you should either be jamming/folding your hands.

Don't limp into pots or call small raises preflop.

As far as defending your blinds, if you get raised in LP, don't be afraid to put your opponent to the test with 3bet jams.

Short stack limits your options. You are pretty much either folding or playing very aggressively.

Its all math when you are low in chips in a tourney . And yes , you should be playing shove or fold unless there are bubble or level up considerations to be factored in . Allin /fold tables are available that make decisions accurately according to your table position and number of big blinds .If antes have kicked in , they would be factored as well ; that is when stacks generally start to be short . The best pros know the ratios by heart , and act accordingly .

On a 8 person table, with short stack is obligatory to take min one hand in 8 bets.

It depends on the table.. If I have 10 BBs or under I'm shoving ATCs, if folded to me in the CO, or button or SB 20BBs any top 40% to 50% of hands.
Better play will keep you from getting short stacked, to start with.

Yeah, as the other people already said with a short stack it's simply push or fold. With a short stack i mean 10BB or less, usually. So called "independent chip model" or "ICM". You have to push or fold, because mathematically seen, you have not enough chips for a postflop moves. Let's say you have a good hand and making standard x3BB raise. So at this point you are already pot committed, as you have left only 7BB in your stack and the pot is as minimum 4,5BB if you was first to act. This is already more than a half of your stack and means you have to fight for it further if hit or not. So why not just put more pressure at the opponents on preflop already, to gain extra fold equity from them? That what it is about. I hope i could explain it clear.
Ah yeah, if you are new to this concept and not sure which range you usually push in ICM, i would recommend you to train yourself with a freeware software ICM Trainer. It gives a great help.

It's not the game's standard what I'm going to tell you ... but

Considering big tournaments (more than a thousand players) and situations:

Pre Bubble: Very close to it I fold many good games and use more the clock.

Post bubble: without floundering all in, I expect a really strong hand to take advantage in the shove.

Apart from extreme situations where you are less than 5 BB in an early stage of the tournament, I advise the old and good patience and not come out giving all in with any figure in the hand

The game is very simple because there is no game after the flop, no need to look at your position at the table. Came strong hand and go all in.

When you have a big stack you have opened a lot of possibilities and can make mistakes. But with a small stack can not be wrong. Because one mistake, and starts the split push

Decisions become easier .... Depending on how short we are talking here ... Shove any decent hand / fold the rest.

I'm waiting for the right moment. It is important that there was no 3bet (except for rather narrow hands). It is also important in what position you are. If it's late then it will make your task much easier.

So, in short stack model thre are two varints of playing it , but they are simple : the first is all in and the second - fold! And one more thing , you can hardly to slow the game!

Being a short stack is easy because you don't have as many decisions. However, it also kind of sucks because you're the short stack. If you follow the models and know the player, you just have to shove and hope you hold.

Hand selection...

...when I am short stacked comes down to relative strength and position, because as others have said it is all-in or fold until you are out of trouble. A computer simulation once determined that Q7off is the average hand strength in hold-em. You need to move before you have so few chips that everyone calls you. Any pair, and any two cards ten to ace (for Straight potential). Some say any two suited, but suited cards are NOT magical. I want strength if I'm all-in, not hope. Hopefully you at least have better than Q7off. The closer you get to being all-in against your will (in the BB) the less picky you can be. Example: If I'm UTG and get K9off, looking at the next two hands being in the blinds (all-in or almost all-in), then I'm all-in by choice easily. Normally, when not in trouble and having K9off UTG it is an easy fold.

The most relaxed part of the tournament :p you just wait for a decent hand to push. Better to be the initial shover instead of reshove with good hands unless you have a monster hand!

You need to find some push charts on the internet which indicates you what hands to jam from every position in accordance with how many players left to act!

Upon arrival in good hand, to go all-in. Increasing blinds, just may don't let you catch a good cards. Here everything depends on luck.

Short handed play can be fun and sometimes fristrating. I try to make my allin moves in late positions to try and steal pots with half decent hands.

Its all in or fold. You can defend your blind if you have over 10-12 blinds but its better to just go all in or fold. Forget about min raising or limping. It can work at times but in the long run you are better off shoving.
