I've been in to some spots last 2 weeks where I shoved where I could have folded and folded where it was clearly a shove. Bit confused.

Most of these situations were after bubble and one of them a final table bubble where I shoved 45s cutoff 6 big blinds and got called by JQo on the SB with same stack size!!! Like I almost ripped the monitor off the table.

This is extremely dependent on the looseness of the opponents.

If they are going to bluff me no matter what at the flop I may as well kamikaze preflop with an allin or fold (shove or fold basically).

If they are tighter, then... depends on position and how late I act preflop whether I enter the hand or not.

Read on Short-stack strategy. Create/Find some short-stack chart for reference and implement it in your game.

I've created my short-stack strategy using Holdem Resources Calculator, if it helps you figure out on how to go about it.

After the Bubble I still wouldn't shove without a hand T9s or better (in my eyes). In the few big blinds left a few more people could bust and I'll get a better prize, rather than risk busting out earlier with a sub-standard hand

I believe you play the same and take advantage of players who are too tight or too loose. Shoving with a mediocre hand will most likely get you in trouble. If you are prepared for the gamble, take your chance and see what happens.

I used to play until the last blind :D those days have gone , mmmm 1000k privilege days :) ....

Now at about ten blinds i get crazy , I look forward to the moment I shove , but maybe I should be a little more patient with the cards and spots to shove , yes , yes , that for sure ;)

I am still very patient at this point. Pushing with good hands at good postion. No push over the whole table, only when I hold my premiums.

Tight as usual until I have a decent card, specially suited connectors and A's high. doesn't have to be a premium for me to go shove all in

I am very patient, but this basically depends on the opponents without being tight or aggressive or also of my position. In this situation and already inside the bubble would go all in with a strong pair as AA KK or QQ otherwise I would try to take care of my blinds as much as possible. But as we all know you still have a hand like the one I mentioned before does not guarantee you will win the hand, but I think it's the right move. Good luck at the tables and do not hesitate to take action.

As noted above it's all related to your opposition and your position on the table and to a lesser extent your table image. However a point that i think wasn't made is that you should be careful not to wait too long, especially when antes are involved; the smaller your stack gets the easier it is for large stacks to call on you.

It really depends, but me on this kind of spot with 10BB's or less would probably shove with any good hand that appears, but if I thing that you can take an good amount of chips from the guys on the table by using another strategy then I do it.

Being Patient

Honestly sometimes in my mind it is best to hold out as long as possible to let others get knocked out. I occasionally let myself blind down to 2-4 bbs and trying to hang on for another round. Usually this happens when I am feeling unlucky and literally not getting any good cards because I hate getting that low, but sometimes it feels better to just try to get through the big blinds.

Be extremely patient. Like only play top 15 hands, because you may get a strong hand again after the first double up and then be a contender. But, if you shove light, it can get easily picked off by the big stacks.

This is a player oriented question! Some players choose to wait until they get a monster hand, some others shove any two cards and get very aggressive when they pass the 10bbs threshold. Imho you can't wait until you blinded out or you can't open raise with <10bbs. It is a push / fold play!

Short stacked game is the easiest one because you have nothing to lose and everyone can gamble and go all in preflop.

Play with a program like equilab and compare what is the equity of some hands against the top hand range hands. That will help you a lot to understand what hands you should apply pressure with! And of course you should take always into account the dynamic of the table!

OP your push with 54s was ok, don't worry about it. Honestly with that stack you can push 100% ad it will be profitable. You can't be patient at that point, you will not last long anyway. And also, don't be mad at call with QJo, that is a correct call, unless there are a lot of players with 2-3bb in tourney.

The play in question for those interested: We were two final tables 11 players left, 6 on my table and 5 on another, BB was shorter than me, SB close to even. I did not have 6 big bilnds total, close to that effectively with antes and blinds, and I got 45s so...

I kind not regret it, honestly. But the idea for making this thread was like 'Can I act differently given the ladder opportunities ?'

I don't play stuff like SundayMillion for instance, but here I know in the same situation fold makes sense... I was 10th place of 11, big chances other could bust before me and I could even finish on the 9th spot final table.

But here comes reality : the tourney in question was the 888 150GTD Turbo $0.11 buy-in and finishing 9th or 11th was kind indifferent to me. So it took part on my decision.

A bud is asking what I was expecting shoving 45s. Well... I was waiting to get it through and pick the blinds. That happening I would be put to 8th place.

But really, that specific hand is not the main question, if so I would have put it on the Hand Analysis section. It is more about spots where you understand you may act off the charts and stuff like that by x or y reason having 10BB's.

Best Regards

P.S. for the guy saying 45 bet wtf : yeah, lol, got the joke! Like 45bet with 6 bigs!

When I'm approaching 5M (M being sum of blinds and antes) I look for a spot to shove. Any pair, any Ace, 2 Broadway cards etc.

Depends on the stage of the tourney. But I used to be very impatient at this point and have learned that tightening up and waiting can pay off well. At some point I will push all in but I usually reserve that for 5 bb and a premium hand when possible.

This is more psychological by my opinion, every time when im in this situation to go all in or fold i imagine that im on the end battle with myself...it is on me to decide to go for the glory or doom.
