Just wondering how often you should expect to succeed in tourneys. How often should you expect to get in the money, how often final table, how often should you expect to win? Just wondering what people think about this. What is a good result over time?

You will be surprised, but tournament poker is a minus game. You pay a buy-in, from which the prize fund is formed. And also rake, which goes to the income of the poker room. At a distance, you will play in the minus, unless you play significantly better than the other players in these tournaments. It is not possible to predict in advance how much strong field you will get and how well you play. This can be assumed only if you already have some statistics of your game in this room in similar tournaments ...

Therefore, there is no adequate answer to your question. From winning a million dollars, to losing all your money ... :D

i think if you can cash 10 to 15% of the time your doing very well or at least better than most

depends on the game type. 6 max around 20% fullring around 5%~10%. mostly you will earn more from steals than actually winning the hand most of the time..

It depends on tournaments which you play. It is easy to calculate. For example if in your tournament for the 3rd place you got 20 x buy-in then you should be in the top 3 more then 5% of games. ;)

How many tournaments do you dispute? The value of the tournaments you play? The prizes to play! Are important to know at the end of the day if you have had success or failure

I was at first thinking, well all of the time. Which is really how I used to think. After reading the replies and your questions. I have been giving it a good bit of thought.
Maybe I am not doing as bad sometimes as I think. Sure sometimes you look back and think, I should have done a few things a lot differently. But when your KK, runs into AA at the ending of a tourney, hard to change that. I have of course been on the other end of that.

+1 For MTTs atleast 10-15% ITM is a good benchmark to aim for.

Here's a very useful youtube video discussing this.

As for me, I think it is good not to loose your own money during the tournament! It is some kind of win......

I definitely appreciate this video it puts some things into perspective. I am just playing for fun right now but if I could pull in extra money at something I love doing that is ideal. I think I would play like I expect to cash at every tournament but know that it will not happen as often as I like. But it is necessary to get into the mindset that you need to play your best poker most of the time.

Depends on your focus. I "win" 20-30% of tournament. But more importantly is my ROI. This is a better marker of "winning". I have min cashed many times. Unfortunately this has hurt my bottom line

On the games in the tournament it is very difficult to count on winning, you need to wait for the card when it comes and stuffing a huge amount of chips is hard and long, the best way to calculate it in cash games is to play for money and get a profit immediately

some professionals say 1/7-10 tournaments in long time terms, if your goal is to make a competitive chip stack, even though you can make a better result if you just want to make ITM what is shown not to be a very good strategy

I just started playing tournaments again after a couple months off?

i started playing tournaments for the first time last summer I’m 42 years old and played my first two tournaments I lost and the third I cashed in. Of course then I was hooked. $120 buy in $5k guarantee avg 50 players: well I was almost always the dominating chip leader at first break but then didn’t know how to manage a big stack of chips. Thought I had to be the table bully or to get involved In a lot of hands not understanding there were a lot of pissed off players ready to jam on my ass as soon as they made a pair and I’d be forced to fold with my dumb eight out draw. Anyways lost a lot of tournaments week after week till I finally heard the words your the bubble boy. I had no clue what that meant so of course I took a month away from poker to study the bubble how to combat it and how to manage a large stack of chips well my first time back did a crazy eight tournaments for an $88 buy in and placed in 6th place won $790. I went back the next month to the same tournament and placed in 6th place again and the. Believe it or not the following month placed in 6th place again then the next day decided to play another one for $120 buy in $10k guarantee and got fourth place for around $1,000 if I remember correctly. Anyways well I also won a prize in an invitation only poker tournament where you had to win your seat to play in this next one for a top prize trip to las Vegas which I needed up winning the trip with 68 other players there. I quit playing poker as the two largest most successful clubs in Houston were shut down lost my turn to Vegas which the owner of the new poker place he opened has promised to make good on this past summers loss. Anyways to make long story short they dismissed the case against these two clubs and one has reopened again. I just started playing free roll tournaments again to practice and have cashed in 4 out of 10 but 3 of those I had to leave and take a phone call so basically just gave up and went all in In The dark. Pulling a Gus Hansen going all in every time till I busted of had so many chips I couldn’t leave. Lol... anyways so my win rate is at 40% but should be actually closer to 60% and mind you these are free rolls so the action is stupid a lot of guessing changing your style of play and only playing premium hand and when you have the. It’s on the river free ros are fun to jam cause you should get a caller almost every time. In the other tournaments I played that were I’d say the real non bingo tournaments I started to have a win rate of 7-8 out of ten I was making final table back before last summer. I have not played in a real tournament since April and have only played in 10 free roll tournaments and cashed in 4 I do know the last 6 big tournaments I played in I did make final table in all 6 of those. I understand luck and ego and pot odds I’ve learned all the skill and am a master at reading people which is what I mostly rely on to win. I didn’t know I had a talent of gift for this but all my friends make fun of me I’m not sure if it’s out of jealousy but I almost feel like sometimes I’m losing my friends and becoming this leader all alone. It’s kinda weird but at some point I have got to stop catering to everyone else and realize Vod has given me this talent and to go ahead and go for it no matter how others feel. Cause I have actually given up pots and laid better hands down just because I felt sorry for the other guy. Or I’d give chips away and muck my better hand when the girl across the table showed a weaker hand I’d say you got me and let them take the chips because I like seeing people happy but then when it comes down to business I’ll usually take them out In the end. I cNnot even count how many times people loss to a weaker kicker card and how much value people put on suited connectors is ridiculous cause when I have ace nine suites in late position and the other guy plays and eight nine suited and the flop comes 9-jack 5 they lead out and bet their dumb nine another nine comes on the turn and they jam and I snap call and they lose to a four on river. Or they have jack ten and I have king jack and the board comes jack three seven and they bombed the pot immediately which is like a huge red flag. I think why would they bet so much I see two diamonds and a flush draw would they do that with a set no would t they want to get value and try to win a little extra chips instead of just bombing a fourth of those stack obviously too pair I’m not going anywhere after I thought the situation through guy behind me decides to call I immediately put him on queen nine of diamonds for a queen high flush then the turn card comes a club 4 the guy then over compensates and bombs the pot again this time half his stack is in and we are deep In the tournament I look at him and say out loud are you over compensating for your first mistake and now trying to buy and steal the pot away? I still knew the guy behind me was on a queen high flush draw I decided to go ahead because I felt the guy did have ten jack which he did. And the other guy called then a min of hearts hit on river last guy misses his flush but get a pair of nine. The guy basically jams all in but left himself a few chips it was gut check time for me. Either I call and bust out the tournament on one pair of jack with king high or stick to my gut. I was deep in the table for a good three minutes and said I have to go with my first instinct and I called the other guy filed said he missed and what do you know the guy turns over jack ten. The whole table erupted when I turned over jack king for the higher kicker. This is just an example of what happens to me almost in every single tournament I play in. I make the calls I’m not sure others will and also use game theory. I’m broke though and use my winnings to pay off debt then when I have a little extra I’ll win again and use all the money to get caught up. Right now I’m educating myself on how to manage and save for a bank roll and also how to leave a cash game while I’m ahead these are the two biggest holes in my game right now. Not leaving when I’m way ahead and not managing my bank roll. I’m not sure how people sponsor others but I was looking into that cause at this point in my life all I want to do everyday is play in poker tournaments.

I'm not sure if anyone else is going to read through that WALL of text... but I did.... Every single word :)
I'd suggest playing in some micro buyins online and see if you can get a bankroll growing from there. I'm not sure how one goes about getting staked for low buyin live tournaments. Perhaps your friends would be willing to stake you for some seeing as they've seen your prior successes.

It is said that in tourneys you should expect to win from 15% to 20% of the time

My cash percentage is high in tournaments. But due to its ramdomness and the large amount of players it is hard to expect to cash often. For exanple , how many times have you had your aces cracked? Or floped a set and opponents runner runner a straight or flush?
