I play alot of big tournaments on pokerstars, mainly small buy in cheap and rebuys etc, alot of turbos

I can usually get deep and build a big stack standard. but I seem to be falling apart towards the end either getting into bad spots, or called and coolered or occasional losing a toss,
more often than not though I walk into a cooler. its just so hard to keep that stack it could be a little bit of caution causing me to fold to many hands like weak broadway out of position and small pairs
but this is pretty painful alsoit puts me on tilt....
Ive almost cashed big recently a few times, once was for $15,000

yesterday I 1st placed for the whole tournament 888 only to fall short ended up cashing 130 dollers and was so sick because that 720 first place would of been a sweet bankroll to work with as ive only just started back there.

I just get the impression im not the only one.. and maybe small fields are the way forward, that monster cash is obviously going to be nice but maybe not something we can expect to0 often

In a vacuum everyone's expectation to cash, assuming equal skill, is equal to the % of the field that gets paid. So, your expectation to cash is equal to the % ITM x your skill edge over the field. For most solid players in regular tournament structures (most tourneys pay out to about 10-15% of the field if I'm not mistaken), expectation to cash is about 20% or so.

oh yeah also, the vast bulk of your $EV from MTTs (as in, over 80% of it) is in the final table, so... never aim for a mincash. Ever. You want a bink at all times.

I have been going through this problem myself. I can get deep but bust out right before the money or get in and bust out middle of the pack after the money and get pissed that I only won a few dollars. I have really been trying to stick to cash games on bovada cause I do well but the carrot dangling of a big score is so tough to pass up. It's almost like a slot machines chance of winning it all though so I need to lay off mtts until my roll is huge.

friend happens to me the same, the difference game tournaments that are not so high with entry. My game is very regular and good until you get to the final table, but usually I get to hups lose simpre there is like I will shrink and I can not take the top spot is very sad: (

It's always tough to go deep in a big field tournament, even against mostly weaker players (like the mid 2000s). Usually it's like getting through a minefield...with lots of variance involved, you can't get through it everytime. I agree with Alexsei and would say 15-20%

15-20% cash rate is a decent expectation for a player with a decent skill set in a tournament structure.. Playing just to cash is going to limit your overall ability to have larger scores but will keep the swings down...

Variance in tournaments is insane as you are forced to see 5 card run outs all in pre way more often than in cash games so really when you get into the later stages, you need to focus as much on finding good spots to steal more than anything to maintian and build your stack.. Staying more active around the money bubble, and pay increases should help you see a more workable stack as you get deeper..

Hope this helps (Just try and stay active!)

I believe in big MTTs with fields of players more than 1000 your avg ITM is usually around 10-20% if you're a good player, and maybe less if you're still working some kinks out of your game. I personally agree with the idea that smaller fields are they way to go. I take down fields of 50-150 players all the time, and I'm ITM at least 20% of the time. I know big cashes are great, but smaller cashes that you get more often will build your bankroll faster. I started with a $30 deposit, and I had my account up to $1K within two weeks playing MTTs with fields no larger than 200 players

nice work,

does that go for any site taking down 50-150? or is there a particular site you play? Also do you mainly play non turbo MTT. I find 180 fields on poker stars a bit of a grind but if i play a 180 on 888 Poker I can more or less reach final table a fairly large amount of the time

I expect it every time.
(doesn't always work out that way though).
No point entering if you don't expect to win.

You should not worry about cashing big. Do not even think about the money at all. Take each hand at a time and make good decisions. Also inform yourself of the structure of the tournament and the changes of both the players and blinds.

I found out a long time ago that thinking about variance, a big score, and the amount of people is just an easy way to get your mind off of what is important!

And, if you can't stop thinking about how much you should be expecting to win or the money in general, then play at a level where this changes and you are not worrying. As you move up so will your confidence!

I would have to agree with the previous post. You must focus on the task at hand and that is to get your chips in making the best decision from the information that you have. Obviously you are going to think about making the money, but make sure that does not prevent you from making the right decision at the right time to make the money or the final table.
