How long did it take you to manage your BR properly?

So, I had been a losing player for quite a while and had some big wins where I didn't know how to manage my BR shortly after. I think it took me to when I was down around $300 to tell myself to play within my limits (i.e. do not go big or go home). So I started a new account to see how I would do a with a properly managed BR and I honestly can say it is probably the most important thing to do when playing poker.

I've found out that I am strictly an MTT player, all other games aside from a few STT, I do not excel at and get particularly bored of.

Before I had say a BR of 400, I would play $30+$3.00 tournaments, and today I had accidentally joined an MTT of $30+$3.00 and really beat myself for accidentally doing it, as if I had cheated on a diet or something along those lines.

Here are my stats for this account thus far:

How long did it take you to manage it properly? And how beneficial was it for you?

bankroll management, standard deviation, budget, retirement plan, portfolio diversification. It never really gets learned. We just do better as it evolves.

I got it going for about 2 weeks than fell back into the degenerate realm... Lately I've given online a break due to check issues and have just been hitting home games up... Haven't been risking nearly as much and up a couple of 100 in the last week it feels good lol!!

I only realized the importance of BRM when my BR was hit hard.

It took me something like 3 months and about 100 dollars to realize how important BR is.

I'm still very new and the problem I was having was that playing at the limits of my bankroll requirements put me into games that I was consistently losing. Now i am playing at a level I am comfortable with and posting a positive ROI and I've devised criteria for myself for moving up level based on posting consistent positive ROIs over time(still adhering to BR of course).

I still take shots though but they are always withing my BR.

It's a skill I haven't really acquired, Whenever I win a couple of tournaments I get exited and blow my bankroll like a dunce.

I have to admit it's tough sometimes to keep to BRM. Takes a lot of emotional control. My biggest problem is beer tbh. I wish my computer had a built in breathalizer.

The comparison of bankroll management to a diet is realtivly close in my opinion. The more important your weight loss needs are comparable to how financially capable you are. If youre heart attack stroke risk or saved up for months to start a bankroll you dont want to blow it with bad decisions. I struggle to fight the urge to play for large payouts live and online constantly. Hoping that joining this forum and reading what and how other players strategize will keep me on track. Like a fitbit community to keep track of eating habits and exercise this forum looks like a great way to stay focused and on track. Been trying for 10 years plus to perfect it and still fail, live and online.

BR Management is KEY

Listen i dont care if you are the best player in the world if you don't play the proper stakes for your bankroll you will go bust it is a Mathmatical Certainty which is why BR management was created in the first place by created i mean talked about and implemented. Poker is a game of STRAIGHT MATH in fact i don't even try to read ppl online i play the math if the math says call i call if it says fold i fold and am quite successful this is the reason i dont bluff that much unless you just KNOW by a gut feeling the other player has nothing

i have never deposited just one penny, so i always had to regard br management, right now i have over 60 Dollars on Carbon and pokerstars, only by winning free money and use this for improving the br, if you do not know your limits you will bust it immidiatly.
Its hard in the beginning but you will see its working out if you play good poker and dont get bored!

I been playing 12 years and only in the last 5 months active here at CC have I learned about BRM. I always thought the higher you went in levels was the fastest way to win money. But it's the fastest way to go broke.

Been playing over a year, still struggling with it.
I am disciplined and build a good BR, and then lose it all!

I've personally struggled in great depth with the concept. I think it is one of the most important factors in becoming a successful player. I started playing freerolls and decided to not make another deposit for quite some time. So far I've found it very helpful for two reasons. 1) There is much less stress involved when you don't have any money on the line. 2) I feel as though I am putting in my proper dues and starting at the bottom. This is actually a double edged sword imo. It is not the best way to learn the game as it is not the best form of poker (def not recommended for beginners). I am, however, learning a lot about my game (and the game in general) by competing in the freerolls.

My issue with free rolls to build bankrolls tJ is that you can develop poor habits playing in free rolls sometimes. They can really increase your aggression level, as you have to reply on some luck at some point in FR play.

I have to say that there is something inherently wrong with me when I have some money... I never know when to stop and it has cost me on numerous occasions. I wish I knew why. To answer I still have not learned...

I guess like most of us in the beginning you have no idea of a BR system. I fooled around like 2 years or so when I decided to play seriously.
So I did read some books and articles about general strategies and advice and then came into contact with what is BR.

It took me about my first 3 years into poker. Once I discovered it, I thought maybe I can help increase my BR by getting my poker dealers license and still stay in the game :p and that's exactly what I did
