I am recently playing online poker again after many years away on Bovada. What is the deal with the 135 minutes late registration periods? It makes it almost impossible to know how long you can expect to be playing roughly when you start one. I was in one the other night and it began with 150 players and a ended up with over 600 by the time they finally closed registration. So first of all what is up with the long ass late entry periods?

Second, how long after a tourney starts will you go ahead and buy in anyway? I know a round or two is nothing to worry about early on but it seems like the players just keep coming so long as it is open no matter how large the average stack might be.

Do you like having such long entry periods? I don't mind the extra $$$ in the pool but the clueless way it leaves you about how long it might take really sucks.

Many players are registering after one hour on these tournaments because the blinds are higher and for a short time they can make many chips.
I also registered and played some tournaments after one hour from tourney start and it looks great, because I got prize on some of those.
For me the best time to register on late registration MTT's is after a ten level.
(I mean on one registration tournaments where you start with 5 000 or 10 000 chips).

...what?

I usually join tourneys a little late personally. Not sure why, but I can't really think of a super great "why not" since I'm relatively tight in the beginning anyway.

Some tourneys though only make sense to join late. Take Action Hour for example. One hour $5 rebuy period where the blinds are 2k/4k/200 by the end and a starting stack of 3k or an 18k starting stack with 25/125/250 starting blinds for $10?

Chipleader usually has 60-70k which isn't a huge advantage at that stage, and they could easily have had to invest more than the $10 you did.

Also, the reasoning behind it is so that they make their gtd payouts without providing overlay. It's usually pretty easy to tell how long the tourney will go on, just assume there's enough players to cover the overlay and then some.

If the turny has an add-on, and there are at least 60% of the players still below half of what the chip leader has, i will get in right before the time runs out on late registration. If it is a no rebuy-no add on turny, s-s, i won't touch it. If it is a deep stack, with or with out re buys or an add on, i usually get in just before the registration ends. Bovada does have some of the longest dam late registration times in the poker world. And as a member stated above, they do it to keep overlays to a minimum.

The idea generally behind such long late registration is that they can offer a guaranteed prize pool which can be met. It also gives people plenty of time to register if they of course can't make the starting time and last but not least; it gives everyone the option of their preferred stack depth to start playing at.

For example I much prefer and think I'm better with a shorter stack so me joining towards the late stages makes it better for my game as I feel I'm much better there. Having said that; if I'm on time I don't mind regging from the start.

I usually reg from the start like I say, but there are some tournaments depending on their structure where I will leave it much longer if I can't be bothered playing deep stack poker.

Overall I think it's good having long late registration because you get tons of fish early who are terrible at deep stack poker and of course you get tons of fish signing up just before it closes who are also equally bad at short stack poker so I think it's +EV regardless if you're a winning player as it just bloats the prize pool with more dead money.

I never register late. Some people do it to avoid getting knocked out early (by some wild donk or something). Those donks will be out in the first part of the tourney. But personally I think that it is more important to built a healthy stack which you definately need later on.

There is absolutely no reason to join tournament in late registration If you can join it on time. Only If your confidence is terrible and you are affraid to play and affraid that you will get busted early. But in this case you shouldnt play poker at all...

When you register late, you miss many hands in which you could build your stack. If you register later, blinds are bigger so that means you have less BBs starting stack. lets say first level is 15/30 and starting stack is 1500. So at beginning you have 50BB. but if you register after first hour and blinds are already 60/120, you have just 12,5BB, so shortstack and you are almost forced to play allin right from beginnning...

I hate those long Late Registry period... For me, the time available for this should be only around 15min (except rebuy tournys).

I rarely do a late entry too...

I rarely do a late entry, but when I do, I register only on tourneys with add-on and I register just before the late reg end, then I can buy and add-on and have a reasonable stack to work with.

you can gain alot of chips from registering the start simply because in large fields people like to try and double up are on tilt or are just bad players.

Turbo's its quite important to get in from the start,

as for 10 mins plus you can easily build a stack and go onto win.
the amount of times ive took a bad beat almost got knocked out and got back to 20k is proof its not always importan

I never understood why people would late reg either.
Seems like with the variance, you need to get as many hands
in as possible before you are short.....

depends on overlap... blinds level, how many players left.
etc...

if I found huge edge, and could practically get it, join in it with out hesitation.

Don't do it if you can avoid it...you lose a lot of play and time to get reads on your opponents. If you must (because it is such a juicy tourney, overlay, couldn't be home in time, etc) then I'd say have at least 25 BBs and don't enter turbos period.

I think it depends on the structure and stack size, I don't late reg any turbo's and in games with larger buy in and big starting stacks I kind of prefer using the early stages to build reads and look for high ev situations vs. some of the weaker players that I spot.

I agree. I'm no expert, but if I can I always come on time. Few times I also used late registration and it's great if you can't make it when tournament starts.
Though these long periods of time for late registration sometimes frustrate me. When ppl keep coming and you realize the end is nowhere close lol.

I don't mind reging at the last min, you can take advantage of some of the bigger stacks that think the low stack is bluffing.

But what if I don't get any decent hands? or don't hit the flop at all? When I'm short stack I could easily run out of time before I get good cards. Don't want to sound stupid lol. But I'm not even fan of turbos etc for this very reason. I like to wait for better cards.

Depending on the buy-in, starting stack and blind levels I tend to register when the starting stack is about 100bb worth. If the blinds are too steep I might just register before the tournament starts.
