First off, keep accurate records. If you're playing freerolls
with sizable fields, the mathematical probability that you're "almost always" making it to the last 10% is minuscule. So find out how often you're actually getting that deep, and stop kidding yourself that it's as often as you think.
As for opening up your game in the middle stages, that can work anywhere from very well to very badly. It's highly situational. As a simple example, some situations are far better to play suited connectors than others, so it matters not just that you play them, but how well you differentiate when to play them vs when not to.
