A few days ago I came across someone who was 3-betting depolarised and I struggled to make any effective adjustment against them. Card distribution was pretty brutal as well but think after a decent session against them at $3.50 they were like 25-16 up. Usually people at $3.50 games are pretty soft and I almost never end up 9 games down against one person and if I play someone enough I'm confident I'll end up in profit against 99% of players.

Stacks are 500 blinds 10/20. I min-raise to 40 he 3-bets to 110, I shove and he call most of the time. I was geting so frustrated and not being able to make adjustment. Once I realised he was 3-betting alot I jammed looser. Once I realised he was 3-bet/calling depolarised I only 4-bet shove polarised but the problem was I had to weight this towards monsters which is extremely hard in a HU hyper turbo. I then started calling more with things like K8s rather than jamming only for a king to hit and him have KQ/KJ type hands. The problem with calling hands like this I was ending up dominated alot when I did hit which meant shoving over his raise just wasn't profitable.

How do you adjust against someone like this in matches that generally only last 5 minutes so you can't sit and wait?

Edit: I also started calling with non-dominated hands to his 3-bet range like suited connecters but when I missed I was hemorrhaging chips and even a double up would only leave me even stacked. I also started jamming more on dry flops to take pots away but this was nowhere near making up for chips lost over the games.

find a softer player to go up against, but i can understand you probably wanted to challenge yourself a bit

but there is no shame in admitting that somebody has your number ... it can be a momentum thing ... he may have been carding better than you at first or simply got you off you're game and then he just had the momentum and didn't look back

as far as strategy, u seem to have more HU experience than i, so i will defer to others to go there, but good luck!

I'll sit and have as many re-matches as someone wants HU as I know I can adjust better than nearly all of them can adjust to me at this level so playing more adds to my edge. Also it helps skill wise as I move up stakes I'll encounter better opponents so may as well practice now when one gives me the chance.

Limp the button with a polarized range.

Also being down 25-16 means nothing. You easily could have had just worse cards or got unlucky.

Yea cards did run pretty bad (with hole cards and some of the flops) but I felt like I was being outplayed as I couldn't seem to make any effective changes

I'm pretty sure we just need to play the variance game here. I Think with a range do wide we can safely 4 bet jam hands like QJ or K9 etc. I mean obviously we end Up flipping a lot but I don't mind that cause we will be in such great shape when he folds and are never really too badly off when he folds.

Or you can look at the opposite approach and start limping from the button but for this to be ok we need to know how often he is calling your open or folding. Cause, for example, if he only 3 bets or folds prelop and hardly ever calls I would continue just raising min prelop.

He was calling a decent amount, like 50% or so, but also 3-betting more than I was happy with and not folding those 3-bets to shoves. I'd already got rid of all junk from my opening range.

So I should jam fairly depolarised against a depolarised range to adjust?

Ya or seeing as he calls a lot, just close our opening range and limp more buttons.

What do you mean by depolarized? What the heck is that?

Polarized means a range of very strong hands and pure bluffs (usually hands with blockers or suited crap and/or small pairs) whereas depolarized means a wider value range with no pure bluffs.

I haven't really read any responses so sorry if this is already mentioned. But it depends how wide he's 3betting, i'd probably adjust by limping the button more. (yes it was mentioned several times in this thread. lol)

And De-polarized is a "linear" range of hands, basically a sliding scale of hands.
