What seperates the best players from the rest. Im a mtt player have played now for 6 years and i hardly ever get deep runs now haven't for a year or 2 apart from the odd 185 dollars and 275 dollars for 4th and 2nd on pkr nothing. I question my luck alot when i run my kings into aces or lose a coin flip with ak suited to ak unsuited or ak to aj or aces to kings that would set me up for a deep run but there is obviously more to it. I can change gears turn the agression on when the table is tight and play tighter when the table is loose and occasionly limp into cheap pots with great odds with my suited connectors in good position. so what seperates the best please can i hbave tips to improve my games would be much appreciated.

Taking notes on players when not involved in hands will drastically improve your game.

You'll be shocked to see how much information you can gather by observation and some note taking.

Come up with abbreviations to 'categorize' players or play styles around the table.

At showdown, see what they came with and how they bet on all streets.

Apart from note taking, there are podcasts to listen to.

I'm currently going through the podcast 'The Mental Game of Poker' as suggested by another member on this forum.

Oh and this forum is an invaluable resource of information.

When you are playing well in an mtt the only way you are going to be knocked out when you get really unlucky but the format with blinds keep increasing and antes its puts lot of pressure on short and mid size chip stakes so in these desperate situations you cant avoid bad beats.

Interesting, where can I find that?

Much study, that's what separates the best from the rest.

Get some coaching or go to a training site, you are asking a general question that cannot be answered. no one knows how you play or what you think about while you play, the fact you have played 6 years without a win means you are either not playing enough, or you are just not good enough yet to win. Look to work on your thought processes, instead of just following certain rules about the game, work out why you do certain moves and why they might be bad or good. Work out why it's good to raise QJs on the button vs two loose fish in the blinds who will call us wide. Work out why it's good to 3bet jam a wide range over loose openers with 20BBs.

Both are hard to fix, especially since most of us have jobs and poker is likely a hobby of yours.

general advice would be to play more hands, get it in more often and give youself a shot at getting bigger stacks. But again i just speculate on the way you actually play, but since your first thought is that you run badly, it usually means you don't get it in with worse hands enough, you have to get lucky in MTTS to have a shot at cashing big, that means sometimes we have to outdraw other players or get our stack in when we might get called and be behind a lot. It could also be that you are forgetting the times when you have outdrawn other players, which is totally natural our brains always remember the times we got sucked out on, but rarely the times when we do the same to others.

anyways hope this helps, but it likely doesn't.

I am currently running into the same problem. I can make it ITM but finish right after the bubble. There always seems to be that one hand that cripples me.

What is the difference between good players and the best players? Is that what you are asking? I wish I knew for sure, but I'll give you my 2 cents.

I think that the best players lose less with the 2nd best hand. Winning with the best hand is easy and we are all pretty good at extracting with top set, nut flush etc. Minimizing your losses is quite important.

I think that the best players also are masters at avoiding difficult decisions. Sometimes it's easy to "imagine" that they are geniuses at figuring out tough problems in the heat of the moment, but I don't think that's actually it. I think that they manipulate pot sizes to make their decisions easy. I think that they are always 1 or 2 moves ahead of their opponents. They already know what they'll do if you jam. They designed the pot odds to make the decision for them. they already know what they'll do on certain turns and certain rivers before they hit.

I like the notion of taking notes when you are not in a hand. Forget about abbreviations tho. I waited way to long to start taking notes because I wanted some sort of super sneaky, secret abbreviation system. Take longhand notes if you have to, just take notes! If you ever stumble on that super sneaky secret system, you can fix your long hand notes then. Just TAKE NOTES!

As for the rest....I had the 'perception' thru most of the first half of this year that the poker gods were out to screw me. Similar bad beats. It is a perception! That rhymes with deception, and it is a self delusion.

It sort of boils down to calculated chasing, and fine tuning the calculating part of it. AKA good decisions. Notes will become a bigger part of it than the pure math of the situation, tho the math is more solid. Either of those might make the difference in a teeter-tooter situation.

Also remember that in MTT's, our successes and failures boil down mostly to the hands we can muck mid stream. If you find yourself getting married to particular types of hands,,,,,,,seek a divorce.

The best players have a solid all round game,

Good at maths, psychology great reading skills, playing the player not the cards and as already mentioned lose the mimum when they have the worst hand and maximising value when they have the best hand - it also helps when they run like Usain Bolt!!:)

The best players have natural talents in the area's that matter.

You can learn the knowledge and the leaks and become a solid player
and being solid can sometimes take you so far

Just like a footballer (soccer player) you can't teach that first touch

You can't train yourself to become an artist without natural ability and poker
is a form of Art
