I've been listening to poker podcasts lately and there seems to be a lot of talk of 12 to 1 or 15 to 1 set equity. I'm not sure I understand the concept. Can anyone shed a little light on it for me?

Thanks in Advance,

This is referring to what you need to win to make set mining a profitable move. You need to win at least 8 times what you put in to break even, but this is only in theory. You will make your set 1 in 8 times roughly. But you need your opponent to stack off, and as this is not always gonna happen - as well as the occasional obvious flush or straight where you may need to fold - you need better than 8 to 1, so 12-15 to one sounds good to me. It depend on how you view a lot of things, like if you think you can outplay your opponent post flop, you may play a PP differently than if you think your opponent is gonna outplay you. So if you have 22-77 (my idea, some go 22-66 or 22-88, whatever) your opponent needs to have enough in his stack to pay you 12-15 to 1 in case you make your set. So if you have 20 BB, and your opponent has 9, it is not going to be profitable to set mine. But, then again, this is not written in stone, it will always depend. But those odds sound ok to me.

fletchdad,

Do you mean that you only do this with SMALL pocket pairs?

yea I meant a pair of 2s to a pair of 6s, but this is so situation dependent, in this case I am talking about in later position calling a limper(s) or a standard raise in low blind play. some do it with 7s or 8s, but as I said it is real situation dependent, but thats what is meant when you hear about set equity.

Oh yeah thanks for the post fletch dad. I understood about getting your odds, but I never thought to look at my opponent's chip stack to see If I could even get those odds out of him!

I always like to call with a small stack, which doesn't take into account the size of the opponent's stack, but if there is a lower number of players in the hand I'll think of this.
