I have been doing some reading and studying lately (what a good boy am I) and i was wondering what the guys and gals who frequent the CardsChat rooms think of the approach and advice profferred by Harrington on Hold'em.

Do you think his advice is outdated or still relevant in the game today?

It is outdated. I have read that book. There are better ones to choose from. You can get smth from it, but it is not the best choice for sure

It's the first book I recommend to anyone who asks me how to play poker. I think there's a lot of solid fundamentals in those books. He also teaches you how to think about hands. You can always get more/less aggressive as the current styles change. Curious as to what people think are the best current choices. I'm always looking for new good poker books to read.

I also liked this book, I'm sure there are more up to date books available, but pondering this one won't do you any harm.

Agree with your post here 100%.

Best current choices for books? .. do you mean for Tournament poker?

I don't know, there is a lot of info in there, especially the endgame vol.2 about when to shove with a small stack etc. that will always be relevant.

I really like Gus Hansen's "Every Hand Revealed". amazing MTT book, where he takes you through hand by hand a MTT he won!

Yes for tournament. I'm currently reading Razor's Edge and realizing that is now 5 years old! I just finished the new Jonathan Little book, but I didn't think it was as great as Harrington.

I love Gus Hanson's book too. Was thinking that the style is a little out dated now. Pure aggression has turned into thinking aggression and a lot more aggression combined with calling. Taking that into account, I think it's an excellent book to learn about thought process.

Outdated? When the author himself writes a new book 10 years later and calls it Harrington on MODERN Tournament Poker... well that's kind of a clue, don't you think?

Seems more or less all poker books become dated at some point hard to really find good material to stay ahead of the curve, never read harringtons book but after reading he responses doesn't sound like it would even be worth the time now

It is kinda like reading about the internet from an AOL or a NetZero disc cover from the '90's you are going to learn about the fundamentals, much still relevant a some not but there are a lot easier, up to date, and more informative in general ways available today to learn everything in the books. Between YouTube,Twitch and online forums like CardsChat You have a treasure trove of information, Having said that I have read all the Harrington books and would read them again, but if time is a commodity in short supply for you, I would spend it on Twitch and YouTube watching free poker video's.

I liked that book, Razor's Edge.

I also liked 'Winning Poker Tournaments - One Hand At A Time vol.1 & vol.2 (didn't really like vol.3... the 3rd one took more time to be released than anticipated, & the HH used in the book were more outdated than the ones in vol.1 & vol.2 ... or so it seemed).
I would definitely recommend reading them... I've read each of them many times & still pick them up today when I feel like pondering 5 or 10mins. on a book.

I think it's a basic book, it teaches very well the basics and the thinking. I think it is still relevant at my early stages it helped me a lot:)

Didn't mean to infer the original Harrington books are not good. They still have value and I still recommend them, however the game has changed since he was a deep runner.

it's both

it's still relevant, the underlying information is still very much the same and thinking your way through a hand is still the same.

However the situations it presents and ideas are probably outdated in terms of opponants ranges and the differing situations.

you can certainly learn from this book, but make sure you keep in mind it was made in a time where people played much worse, much tighter in general.

I've read it and would recommend it, even if just for the fact most of the regs at your local casino are probably playing this way
