Hello all,

Typically I play my 10-15% best hands at the beginning of the tourney, and become more loose as the tourney progress.

This range seems to work good when there are 9-10 people at the table. However, what should I do when the table only has 5-8 players?

Any recommendations on the % of hands I should play?

this is a pretty broad and frankly, unanswerable question...

Why? I see a lot of charts on how to play when there are 10 players at the table. I'm sure similar charts could be/have been made for all possible amount of players.

I'm also looking for rules of thumb, such as playing only Ax and up, where x is the number of players at the table.

Mtt's? STT's? MTSNG's? 6max? full table? what your skill level is? what your opponants skill level is? etc

and i havent read that article, but it looks to me like it's a cash game article, which has little bearing on Tournament play.

Small Mtt's, with 2-3 tables. Tables generally can have up to 10 players, and usually get merged when there are 4 or 5 people a table. This is amateur poker, so I guess people are not really good. I tend to finish at the final table, however I suspect I am wasting chips by playing to tight when my table is half-empty.

ok so your playing MT sng's basically, you want to be playing pretty tight early.. something like 10/8 or 13/11 would be about right, if your a decent player posflop and arnt playing too many tables, something like 15/13 isnt out of the question.

late stage blind play i suggest learning some basic ICM concepts, you can start opening up and being more aggressive in stealing the blinds, you can also start to lower your raise sizings. post some specific hands in the Hand analysis section and you will get much better answers.

ask a general question, you will get a general answer :D

Thank you for your help! However I have one question: why should I lower my raise sizing?

newbie

I am a newbie on here but i personally think you should stick with playing strong hands and play the people at the table. Sometimes i find it difficult with over aggressive players pushing with marginal hands so waiting for the right cards here would be best which will lower your %, but if the table is conservative then you can loosen up a bit and just shutdown if needed. So i guess from my perspective, it is horses for courses.
Cheers,
