i know that i don't contribute much around here, but i've not been playing a TON of poker lately. been playing a little bit more, trying to prepare for a $600K in early Jan at my local poker room. and my tournament poker play straight up and down sucks a$$.

played the Noon tourney today. 40 people bought in, top 5 places paid; 5th was $57, 1st was $360; $35 buy in. cheap enough to gain some experience.

made it to the final table, i have a little bit more than 10 big blinds left. around 15k or so.

i'm on the button, 10 players on the table,

blinds are 600/1200

first to act, folds
second to act , folds
third to act, three bets
everybody folds around to me

i look down at pocket 9's;
i shove all in ; around 15K in tourney chips

small and big blinds folds so we are heads up

he flips AQ

three deuces and a Queen hit the board; i say good hand have a nice day

i guess i could have just flat called a third of my stack???

what say ole wise box?? i figure i'm pretty close to a coin flip??? dumb move? it happens??

went and sat on a cash table and had my roll back to even in like 10 minutes but ; i'm trying to be a better tourney player and when it's down to one and done, i mean , what do i do here fold??????

your on the final table, your holding 99 and he 3x bets you, you have to know he is going to call, and his range
you also have to know who your trying to exploit since your on the final table,

in this situation, if i wanted a slight gamble i would of called and judged it on the flop
i think his 3x raise was way too much pre though
but if im calling the outcome would of been the same, usually im hoping they miss the flop
but in this occurance he will act before you and you have to decide whether your ahead on the flop

on the other hand, if you gamble this now you are most likely going to at least cash the tourney, and as long as you abuse the players that are still playing tight you can grow your stack

but i dont know your opponents stack sizes and what not, im probably more inclined to just shove over top, and then its a race

Standard play, you need to shove here always. You did nothing wrong. You got unlucky on three counts: he could have rags here and they fold, you could have gotten called by a small pair that you crush, lost a race in in this spot your chance to win the hand ~56%. if AQ is unsuited and ~52% if suited.

You need to win your races coming down the stretch in order to win tournaments, it inevitably comes down to a race.

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda...Hind sight is always 20/20. You got your chips in good and lost. If you would of won that hand you probably wouldn't think twice about it. Know you made a good decision, and move on.
Like stated before we don't know the dynamics of the table, but I think it was a good shove. Better luck next time.

I think you did the right thing he could've have a low pocket or even missed the flop and doubled you up but that's poker some times you win some time you loose:(

You were slightly ahead when the money went in.

You didn't mention villains image before this hand, nor the average stack, nor your chip position. These are important elements in our review, and your decision what to do.

If villain had a rock image, you don't do it. If he was a loose cannon you do.
If villain was the short stack you do it, if he was the big stack but had shown no bullying, you might not call pre.
If he was the bully, ah ha....big decision time and need to evaluate more than those simplicities. Like stack sizes and rank placement .

10+ BB is not horrible at a final table of 10 from the original 40. The concept of waiting for a better opportunity is NOT dismissed by pocket 9's. It is not gonna be impossible to pass up this opportunity. Unlikely yes, but not impossible. This is where we, the reviewers, need more meta data.

On the face of it, you played it right. But did you take all the available info into consideration?

If you snap shoved, I doubt you took it all into consideration.

1. How does BB play in general? If he's TAG it's good/if he's LAG - it's bad, oddly enought.
2. How much chips did BB have? If he is at your stack size or lower it's an 'k call for him to defend BBvsSB with AQ from a potential steal from a short stack
3. You caught a cooler !BUT it's a bad move to shove 99 as you are rarely are getting called by something that is worst than you hand(again heavely depends on your op), as 99 is at the bottom of the ~3% premium hands and when you do (as in this instance AQ) you are basicaly hoping for ~55%/45% =~con flip so....
4. You have 12.5bb and are on SB, so you have a whole circle to wait for better situations.
5. No, 3betting here is bad. You have 12.5bb-3=9.5bb, so what happens if he 3bets shoves or even worst raises? If you fold - you have 9.5bb and just cripled yourself on the other hand can you call, would he be 4 betting with something like Kqo?
6. Good luck at your tourney!!! =)

In the future, it would help if you posted more details regarding the hand and situation if you want analysis. Also posting the result of a hand you want analysis on isn't going to improve the discussion of the hand or benefit what you're trying to learn.

This is an easy reshove against anyone except a massive NIT.

This was a destiny hand. There were several ways to get to the same result.

Its the FT and you were pot committed if you did anything but fold. So even calling PF would have most likely ended up the same.

It would not be impossible to fold pre! Unlikely for most of us, but not impossible. In hindsight it is the only survival scheme.

This is where all that other info plays.

Agreed with all, your 10x BB and with pocket 9's its an easy insta shove no matter what imo. It was going to be a coin flip no matter what. If anything you never know if you flop another 9 (1 out of 8 times IIRC). Good play, bad result.
