I wanted to share my thoughts on the new GG Poker Flip N Go tournaments and offer some tips as I gave one a go last night and it's safe to say the following is all true:
- These will be a degen's dream
- These will be the most tilting experience you might ever face
- This innovation will appeal to those looking to get MTT's in quick.
Ok so the set-up - and some things you need to know:
- You buy-in to the upcoming flip at the buy-in level of your choice
- You choose the number of buy-ins you want to enter for. THIS IS KEY!
- The tournament starts as an all-in shootout - you have to win your table to advance
- You are dealt 3 cards and choose one to discard
- All players go all in and play progresses until 1 player holds all of the chips
- Once all tables are complete, players assemble as a standard MTT with most players holding an above average stack and play progresses as a normal MTT.
TIPS TO WINNING
- You have to buy-in for 10 stacks. Why? Take this example:
I played last night and bought in for 10 stacks = 100BB. Most bought in for 10 but some bought in for 1, 3, or 5 stacks
- One of the short stacks won the hand - but only got 240BB. I won the side pots and got 640BB. So even though I had the 2nd best hand, I took a 2.5 to 1 chip advantage heads up, and again all in and won the table.
- Had they bought in for 10 stacks, I was toast.
Study your opponents hands before choosing your discard.
- Say what? You SEE YOUR OPPONENT'S HANDS BEFORE YOU DISCARD! I was shocked.
- I was dealt KdTh6d. As I looked around the table I noticed almost no other diamonds were in play and no one had a 6...so I made the decision to discard the Th v 6d to give myself a chance to with diamonds. As it turned out, I made a 7 high straight being the only one with a diamond. So use the info in front of you to make better decisions. You are against up to 9 other hands - the best hand pre-flop will not always win.
We cut a field of 250+ players down to 31 in 5 mins and all were in the money. And - because most players bought in for 10 stacks, min cash was above $2.60 with a top prize of $36 bucks - or something in that range. Decent payout for around 2 and a half hours of work.
The interesting is after the normal play resumes, don't expect bust outs quick - everyone is within a few BB of each other with no short stacks so it really does play like a multi-table SnG from that point. No prying on short stacks that scraped in under the wire which I actually liked.
Overall this is a really cool innovation by GG and I applaud them for the effort. Be prepared to pay $0.20, $1.50, $20, etc for these and not the advertised 2 cent, 15 cent, $2 dollars, etc - you'll just set yourself up for an impossible climb to win your table, and don't be surprised if your pocket aces pre-flop lose. Remember you are against 8+ random hands.
