I am wondering how people choose to play garbage on the SB.

For examples sake assume you have an average stack at a table with a mix of tight, loose and maniac players. Blinds are about 2000/4000.

If dealt junk, even though it's only costing 2000 to see the flop, I would fold and keep the 2000. The reason for the question is this play raised a few eyebrows at a recent live tournament.

I think if you don't feel confident in playing the hand to fold it. There is a time and a place to play garbage from the SB but if you'd rather keep the chips over risking maybe hitting on a marginal hand it is always best to just fold and move on.

Well several situations can imply that you make the call for the difference.
One being that if say there are 4 callers at the table and noone has opened the pot there is 11k in the pot ,understand the theory ???
It cost you two more to see A flop unless the big blind opens at which point you can fold.
But you have to look at your odds to at least see the flop in that situation.
I dont like to put off the image at the table that you can bully me on my blinds and take advantage of my blinds because you figure I will fold.
Most times than not I find myself at least making A call in the small bling in unopened pots.
That is just my honest opinion.

If everyone is limping and the guy next to you generally hasn't been raising as the big blind, then you are pretty much in good shape to call, especially if there are a few players in.

Put it this way: 4 callers of 1BB each, plus the BB that is there, for your half a BB you have to put in you are getting 19 times back on investment.

However, and this is key: If you don't hit solid on the flop, take an exit and the loss. Just remember that there are at least 4 people at the table who liked their hand enough pre-flop, and it's fair odds that one of them paired up a decent flop.

Yeah, folding is often the best option in SB. Even when you do get good odds to call.

I fold my SB quite a bit. unlike playing from the BB, you're always gonna be in worst position and you're not getting as good of pot odds as you do in the BB.

That said....limping along with garbage from the SB is something I'll do occasionally when the conditions are right.

1st condition: have to be able to flop a strong hand or strong draw. so I'm more likely to limp along with :3c4: :6d4: than :3c4: :9d4: and
I'm more likely to limp along with :qd4: :2d4: than :qd4: :6c4:

2nd condition: effective stacks have to be big enough that I can get handsomely paid if I hit my longshot dream flop. So if average stack is just 15bb and we're all about average, then I'll just elect to fold my garbage in the SB because winning 15-20bb won't pan out in the long term for all the other times I have to fold on the flop.

If the blinds are 2000/4000 with a average stack I am folding a lot of hands on the sb...say hands like 34 Q6 K7 and junk like that. A average stack is norm. only about 22-28 BB'S and even a half a BB at that point is alot to your stack. I will still call in sb with spec. hands like J8s Q9s and hand that flop well. But other then that im folding

2 ways

Well looking at the blinds i concluded that we are middle or late stages of a tournament. There is one way that i would definitely not play a garbage hand from small blind and that is by flat calling 2000 to see a flop. No wonder eyebrows were raised, that play is just not going to be profitable most of the time.

Holding garbage plus being out of position and limping here is the worst idea ever. There are only a couple of plays i would make here. Either i fold pre flop or since we are at average stack i would shove in an attempt to steal the big the big blind and the antes.

Eyebrows were raised because I folded.

In that case if the whole table was raising eyebrows then i would say something like this to them, "You guys folded to me remember" ??.

If someone asks me why did i fold then i would say "Are you talkin to me" ??

Inspired by Robert de Niro .. :)
