You don't have to play loose just because it's a freeroll. Once you become a member of the freeroll club and have access to the freeroll passwords, try to follow MTCashman or MTCash for a tournament or two, just find the table he is sitting at and watch his play. He is very patient and plays a short stack until the very late stages of the tournaments, and he is the leader of the leaderboard. I am not saying that you have to adopt his strategy, just that it could be helpful to be aware of the possibility. Anyway, a good poker player needs to be able to adapt his strategy to the format he's playing, so one should not play real money tournaments using freeroll strategy or vice versa.

Play tight when opponents are doing lots of shoving! Don't call off with worse hands (AQo + at least unless you have a read on the opponents). Play tight and expect a couple of bad beats

This is exactly what I do. I call a short stack with AQ or better and dominate in the freerolls. However, when I play in a stakes tourney I call the short stack with AQ and almost always am against AK, AA, KK, or QQ. I guess I need to get used to laying down my AQ in these circumstances because I never really see it pay off calling an all in.

I am the exact opposite because I am tired if getting beat constantly therefore I tighten up more.

Well, since you noticed this, change the game, because it is clear that in a free game there is nothing to risk and you can play with a frankly poor card in the hope of a notorious luck, remember this and do not transfer such behavior to the game for money, control yourself, poker is primarily the mastery of your feelings by emotions

It's true I can choose to not play freerolls but I make it to the final table a few times a day and it cuts my overall losses a little. My track record is pretty miserable and I'd like to have a positive ROI someday.

The Cardchat ones and higher level Pokerschool ones are the exception as play is different there.

But yes I agree with you those large field freerolls can give you really bad habits that can hurt your game.

To be a good poker player you must be able to adjust your strategy to the field/stakes you are playing. Unfortunately, freeroll tournaments don't have much high level/strategy thinking but they are winnable. Pro tip: most players are willing to give you their stack preflop with bad hands.

Just don't make your strategy in freerolls a habit!

You should not let another players poor skill and tactics change your game. Freeroll or it it’s still poker. You still have to make the best decision and read. Obviously in a freeroll there’s gonna be a bunch of terrible shoves and plays early on. Either register later or play super tight at first. Don’t get involved with the skillless and maniacs. A poker tournament cannot be won in the first few levels but it can be lost. Don’t let the bad players get you into bad habits. They are playing like donkeys because they haven’t risked anything. You will see that the bad players weed themselves out fairly quick. Obviously some get lucky and stick around. But the good players adjust to the bad players and eventually will win. Play your game as if your in a bigger buy in. But be ready for the freeroll antics during the early stages. Don’t let the bingo players negativity affect you.

It is hard for freerolls to not affect you when you're playing and need a bankroll. I just take them one day at a time and try to focus on the larger picture. It can be very annoying when someone calls you with literally a 15% chance of winning yet nails the board like it was a piece of cake.

Just stay strong on your play and the hands that you play. Don't let what happened in the past disrupt what you are able to do in the future, which is making money from people that make bad decisions.

I use the free rolls to learn on how if i chips and with the binds and antes to see how far i can go in the tournament and it is teaching me to wait in till i get better hands so the free rolls help me out a lot so try that and it will help you
