Are Freerolls Harder Than buy-ins?

I was just asked this question and decided to make a new thread about it because it is an important subject. If you can build a decent bankroll from nothing in a month on freerolls, you will have a much better chance at winning a buy-in. It also depends on the freeroll. The Cardschat 250 people dont mess around much, not like the 10 on demand. I think a high amount of entrants in a low freeroll like 25 and under are the hardest. Still a good learning experience. So what is your strategy for tourney play? try and make

it to ITM or WIN, and how about the :cool:first 2 lvls

Here is what I find difficult with the free roll tournament's.... I have done many on ACR where the field ends up being 650ish players paying the top 10 ($10 prize pool). That is only 1.5% of the field... yikes. Don't mast paid tournament's pay the top 10% or so?

The BOL $100 paid the top 40 but regularly had over 2000 entrants. Again less than 2% of the field.

I should note that while only a small % are in the money the play in the free rolls is terrible. With a bit of patience a deep run can be pretty common.

Tournaments have high fixed costs. It takes the same amount of effort, luck, and time but NOT skill to win a freeroll as it does a 1m Guarantee. I did not notice much skill difference in the big tourneys I'v played only the high rollers are to be avoided.

The thing that makes freerolls seem harder is that you can have AA and get all in against someone shoving random hands and they'll hit that 1 in 10000 shot hand to beat you. So the actually thing is that variance is so absurdly high in freerolls from the bingo players that statistically sometime have to hit a hand that get you knocked out really early in these. Then that also plays into the other side of this, when some of the better players or even the bingo players start to win on these shoves or shove calls after 2 or 3 levels you have the top 10 players already have an absurd lead over the rest of the field. It's a delicate balance between playing enough to win chips and stay with the top of the pack and not playing to much that you lose tons of chips to the random bingo players. But never fear, cashing in freerolls is still a very doable thing!

I think freeroll is a good one for who is starting, after a while gaining experience and money there begins the buy-in tournaments, I always played freeroll with or without money, I think it's cool. the game itself is a little different because it is not paid so people play more loose, it is much more all-in and not as easy as it seems.

In many of the freerolls, it is more difficult to reach the paid seats than in some tournaments paid to reach the money. And I like you, even if I have money in my account, I play in the Freerolls . The Freerolls of Cardschat are the best .

I dont mind freerolls in general however, that being said. The level of play does leave something to be desired. I think its because of the no loss/gain mentality that a lot of the freeroll players have. I have had to tailor my play to be able to compete with players in the freerolls. I can tell you some of the hands you have to play in order to make the money will make you sick. Being a live cash player and pretty well known at my local casino I can tell you that yes it can be very difficult to get out of "online mode" and switch to actually using skill to win hands. Just my two cents.

Freerolls can be a lot harder than buy-in tournaments because players are a lot harder to deal with. They are wider with their ranges and don't know how to fold so bluffing becomes a detriment.

yeah, a lot of people doesn't think that freerolls are important and gamble a lot (shoves a lot of hands) so they get lucky a lot of times

I wouldn't necessarily agree that freerolls are harder, but undoubtedly more frustrating. They require the patience to have to lay down some great preflop hands as there are a lot of loose, foolish, uncommitted, and lucky players for at least the first hour. After you sort through the riff raff the tournaments start looking more like poker. They can certainly be long and grueling, but not necessarily harder.

Fact is a freeroll is to me slop poker, a lot of nasty hands you'd never see in a tournament that has a buy in. The tournaments with buy-ins will be harder to win because you are going to be playing more experienced and skilled players; and while many players believe unskilled players are more difficult to beat, I disagree. Unskilled players only require patience, eventually they beat themselves.

I think there are less freerolls than buy-ins, so its one difference, players playing freerolls trying to build bankroll and players playing buy-ins trying to win Final Tables.

Freerolls are very hard. But as stated in a previous post, all little patience and in my opinion some well timed aggression you can make a small bankroll playing only freerolls.

Hello and welcome .I think free roll is not easy because there is no risk .If you lose you lose nothing in difference with any buyin. So its difficult to make a bluff(opponent will not fold due to a small kicker etc).Good luck at your tables.

I believe that in freerolls, people play calmer and more relaxed, so you cannot risk playing such games, people have nothing to lose.
But in games with buy-in, people play in a measured and often wary way of raising their opponent’s bets.

No, you can't compare freerolls with other tournamets, freerolls are the lowest level of Poker with real money involved

In my opinion freerolls are harder because too many players go all-in and the good hand become duds/losers.

Buy ins because of the money paid. Players are a little more careful.

Practice matters, studying you can get wins in tournaments. Nothing crazy and nothing harder than others, I am actually writing this about freerolls.

In the freerolls the variance is much higher. Players play without much responsibility with their cards. However, there are many more weak players than normal tournaments. The CC freerolls have a good level, there is hardly anyone going all in at all times.

Freerolls are hard because it's free. People won't hesitate to get it in with absolute garbage. The people that are the most serious still are the ones that make it in deep. Playing crappy cards with crappy odds only leads to a dead end for the luckbox type of players. I always say if you can make it past the first hour or two in freerolls, you got a good chance of making it to the money.
