Have you ever folded AA preflop ?
I have and I wish I had quite a few times.
The reason I folded AA preflop was simple. I was in a sattelite tourney at pokerstars it was a fpp buy in. It was 10 fpp's and the top 30 players or so all won an entry to a $3 tourney. There was only 1 spot remaining to get knocked out before the rest got the 1st place prize. There was a maniac on my table with a monster stack going all in every hand (sure you've seen what I'm describing). I was in the BB with AA. I had about 300 chips left after my BB and the blinds were like 1200. There were 4 all ins before the bet got to me. All I had to do was fold. and hope they all did not have the exact same hand and split the pot. Chances were at least 1 was out the door. they were all good hands it was like KK, QQ. JJ or something and the maniac had 3 6 off. All I remember is the flop it came 333. He knocked out three players. and I got paid

I hope this is a joke.

I would say the only time to fold it preflop would be a satty on the bubble, but I would have to say, even then I am unsure if I would do it.

In the situation you described it would be completely pointless to call with any two cards. When you are on the bubble of a tournament where the top(whatever) all get the same prize, then yes it can be ok to fold AA.

I lost a huge part of my bankroll in a cash game once calling an all in with AA. Learnt my lesson i guess :(

If you think you did something wrong by calling all in preflop in a cash game with AA.....you are probably mentally retarded. Get that checked out.

Your action of calling was the right move on a % chance basis. Remember you have no control of the cards to come and therefore the outcome. Concentrate on improving your actions and keep them separate from the outcomes.

The double or nothings also (which is like a satty bubble). There are 6 left your a mid stack. Two similar smallish stacks go all in and chip lead shoves over them, then you fold AA.

I really have to agree that this was a no brainer fold. You always have to keep in mind your ultimate purpose. For you it was to place above the bubble. The odds were with you to place without having to make a bet. Now in any other instance, it would be foolish to fold. The only other worse thing would be to call and not raise it up as it should be raised.

I would fold AA on the bubble of WSOPME, provided I was shortstacked and folding would get me in the money.

It is always an interesting question.

1) The OP was right to fold - someone is going to get knocked out and therefore you will get the biggest prize on offer - unless they end up playing the board - then you have thrown away your bet chance of getting the main prize. Obviousl, very little chance of this ;)

2) I a cash game, heads up, if u fold AA preflop you should not be playing a cash game. If you fold AA preflop against all of the table going all in, you should not be playing a cash game. Even if you contemplate folding, you should not be playing a cash game - so you get my point here? :D

In a mtt like the wsop for example, as only_bridge said
I would fold AA on the bubble of WSOPME, provided I was shortstacked and folding would get me in the money.
this takes you back to point 1.

Also, when u r in the money and by folding u would move well up the cash due to lots of players being all in, then you could possibly fold - but that would depend on your chipstack, who you had covered, who could know u out, etc.

Just my thoughts ;)

After I posted this!!

I was in the 25 cent mtt on cake I was chip leader with 48,000 chips. I was under the gun on a full highly aggressive table. My ultimate plan was to limp with AA get raised then shove. Well it just so happened the second place player was on the table too he had 40,000 chips and he was in the BB. After I limped every one on the table limped except two and basically it was the worst nightmare I could imagine. Seeing a flop with 8 players in the pot. My chances of winning or even calling a bet after the flop were about even with every other 4 7 suited playing fool. Any ways it was too much for the BB to handle I guess. He shoved all 40,000 chips in. I was like heck yeah. Of course I was right after him and I called every one else tossed their hands. He shows 10 10. I'm like pleeeeease no 10. Flop comes flop comes kkj, turn pulls an 8 River 10. I'm like bleep bleep bleep bleeping bleep bleep NH. In retrospect had I gone blasting all in I'm just asking myself would he have called ? I think the answer was yes because 2 hands later I had AK another player had qq. The QQ went all in I called and Mr 10 10 called. This time he had 99. Flop came AA9 He was catching like crazy. I was eliminated and to add insult to injury he made the comment idiot fish after taking me out.

Yea I've laid it down. Wasn't watching my computer and I looked and saw I had AA. Whilst I was thinking what to raise I timed out and hand was folded (thought it would go into timebank but it didn't)

except when on the bubble in a tourney where the prizes are the same for each player you should NEVER fold AA pre-flop in any situation, pretty much sums up every answer in this thread!

Lol, just yesterday, went to the bathroom, came back and from a distance saw I had AA on one of my tables.
I knew I didn't have time to think so rushed to my computer and just moved my slider to AI.
Just when I pushed the raise button I was out of time and automatically folded.
Very EV- to go to the bathroom during a STT.

Tough, if I think I need time to think, I always manually ask time to avoid an autofold or autocheck.

As far as normal situations, in a sattybubble yeah, I folded AA several times.
In all other cases, to me folding AA is out of the question.
I think even considering folding might mean we're playing scared money.

LOL, I'd have a really hard time folding, but thinking about how many times I've gone down with pocket A's, it would definitely make it a whole lot easier !!!!

Sure, thats an easy fold scenario, also in the bubble of some tourneys if the prize is significant to your bankroll and you have a confortable stack, it could be considered, even though you are hurting your chances to win it.

I remember a story from a friend of mine, Karlo Lopez, at the WSOP main event a few years ago, they where close to the bubble and was 2nd in chips at his table with an above avg stack. At this time his bankroll was very small so a min cash (around 20k) was very significant to him. He was UTG and limped with AA, UTG+1 raised 3 or 4x, somone in middle moved in, table chip lidder on the button moves in too, before my friend gets to act the UTG+1 makes the call. So now he know he would be facing 3 players where 1 of them had him covered and he could risk getting busted, so he folded.
Now a days he believes that thinking more on the BIG goal of winning the tournament and not a min cash (which at that point was significant) he should have called.
End result is he would have been busted but instead he went to finish like 30+ for a 200k+ payout

i remember when i first started playing poker and thought AA was the best hand, soon to find my self losing on every hand when i was dealt them, so now when i have them depending on my position, not even i get rid of them, to most a could be a stupid call, but i have learnt my lesson on way too many occasions, bcuz of the donks who call with 76 and hit a straight or trips or something, but i would fold them preflop

lol AA IS THE BEST HAND pre-flop, if you will be moving all in in that spot you will be in excelent shape, now after the flop anything can happen and you need to learn to let go of them if the board is bad for you and there is a lot of action, but folding them pre-flop with very very very few exceptions is just the worst possible play
