Hey everyone! I'm 25 years old I have been playing online for around 10 years but started playing for actual cash online about a year ago. I am a decent player nothing much maybe above average. Well anyways what tips do you pros have for a litt noob and his first tournament journey :D I live in a terrible city toledo ohio to be exact so I don't exactly expect the strongest of competition and the buy in is 50 dollars which is basically low roller I supposed here at the hollywood casino. Thanks for your tips in advance - Alex

Tight agressive is the right play. Have been 5 times in the past half year. The first time I played to much like I played with friends. A bit more lose to get lucky sometimes. This will not work against players that know that they look like pros.

People will bluff a lot less in live poker to, facing a big raise often happens when you look scared ofcourse (Or like a fish) but otherwhise only when they have a really good hand.

Good luck.

Hope you will make the cash

If you're gonna go broke, do it by betting, not by calling.

Players will be much worse than you can imagine! (loose!!! with tendancy to over-value their holdings).
As Fred Flintstone would say "BET BET BET!!!"

My first couple live tournament experiences left me in a state of shock. So many crazy hand examples I wouldn't know where to begin.

Stay well aware of the structure as I'm sure the blinds will begin to skyrocket before you know it!

If youre playing for the first time with real cash i wouldnt estimate yourself an above average player. Start low and build your bankroll

My biggest fear when i played my first real money hand was being afraid to call preflop raises. This almost ruined my game and depleeted my chip stack.I strongly advise to stay agresive if posibile through the whole part of the tournament if you can.

I would say to you to buy any book and to read it cause here you will not study a lot if you are total new player , here you can say your strategies and something else but for skills read books and a lot of play. Play with real money, those play money are something stupid you can't learn any game with them cause no one play seriously. May the river be with you :)

1st of all, Don't tell people that it is your 1st time to play live.
If you play a good game online, just play the same way in the live game. (You do have to be careful not to give tells tho.)
Stay sober. Don't drink alcohol. And you don't want to get hyped up on coffee or sodas either.
Relax, don't get nervous.
Best of Luck!

First off do not expect the tourneys at Hollywood to be that simple, there are a lot of good players (in Michigan especially) that will go and play those tourneys, will not be a cake walk - btw tell Hood I said hi! Toledo not that bad - Tony Pacos RULEZ!

The biggest issue online players have when they play live for the first time is knowing the rules. Almost all of my posts are about rules and rulings, many of which are answers to questions about mistakes players made live - you can accidentally go all in, you can accidentally break rules and get penalties, try to avoid these things - best bet pay as much attention as you can to what is going on and never act out of turn - EVER!

Good point about the rules. I do see a lot of new players putting out a single chip thinking they are raising, but didn't announce a raise and it becomes a call. Or sometimes they mean it to be a call and they are forced to put in more to make it a raise.
There are a lot of things you have to think about in a live game, that you don't even have to consider online.
Might be a good idea to read the rules of the casino you are going to. I did that when I started out and was surprised at the differences from one casino to another.

if you haven't ready Dan Harringtons, Harrington on holdem, go find it and try to get through it before you go play. its a trove of useful tourney advice.

hell ive already read it and im going back through it myself as im planning a run to harrahs Cherokee for the upcoming casino championship/wsop circuit tourneys.

its the book that finally got me where i needed to be, math wise. i could calculate outs before, and i could calculate pot odds and implied pot odds no problem. but it took me going BACK through the book again recently to finally bring Ranging my opponents, calculating outs and pot odds, then being able to accurately compare pot odds to my outs/% to win against my opponents ranges. As well as how to price your opponent in, or out to induce his mistakes. before i just did the best i could, his book and some work with paper pen and calculator got me right. it was one of the biggest holes in my game, now plugged. and it was kinda tough admitting to myself i had that leak in my game but i did, and i worked on and through it.
