I played my first live tourney last night at a local casino and Jesus Christ it is a completely different kettle of fish. Even though it was a freeroll + registration fee with rebuys and addons, I set myself a limit of my buyin, 1 rebuy and 1 addon, I literally just couldn't win a pot. No raises were being respected and maybe I respected other players raises too much. I was raised out of a pot when I held 88 with two guys going all-in preflop. An 8 came out on the flop and I would dominated everyone's two pairs and easily been in the top 8 chip stacks. After the break, I wake up with 77, one guy goes all-in preflop and I call. He turns over ATo, the board rolls out 22Q3 and he spikes a T on the river. I am pretty much on tilt and it is getting late and another player goes all-in, I look down at AQo and think this is a hand I should be calling with. The other player has me covered so I call, and she turns of JJ. Neither hand improves and I lose two back-to-back coin flips. Properly frustrating and completely eye opening as to the difference in skill from playing the micro-stakes online to playing seasoned live players.

Even though I sucked last night, I will definitely be going again next month.

It's the same thing as any online freeroll. If you want to play some good poker live you should search for a tourney with a bigger entry fee.

There wasn't a fold button? So what's the difference for online freerolls? :D:D:D

I agree with Samuel Lee, if you want to play a tournament with a better level, you'll have to choose one that has a buy in and that is not very cheap, freeroll is like a bingo for these people.

By the way, if you can somehow to make chips at the start, in the following stages of the tournament should take much advantage over opponents.

freerolls are freerols =)
if you want some fold equity &/+ people folding you need a buyin. You need for people to be greedy about their money, otherwise 72o is a decent push hand from UTG

Freerolls are freerolls.

Poker must be the only game where people say they would do better against better players.

Don't be too results orientated, by which I mean just because an 8 came on the flop doesn't mean you didn't make the right fold decision. Similarly, the AQ could just as easily have hit, so calling wasn't necessarily the wrong thing to do. Sometimes you will run bad and lose a lot of flips. Sometimes you'll run good and win them. Just concentrate on whether your decision makes sense in the context of the game you are in. Good luck next time :)

I dont think it is the same thing as any online... at online u play much more hands, so u could fold more.

Only advice I can give is avoid live rebuys, they are shove fests.

Pay a little bit more and look for a decent freezeout.

This was my thought process. Correct me if I am wrong but you are 1/7 to hit a set on the flop when holding a pocket pair? Meh, it was just one of those hands that would given me a decent chip stack.

Pay a little bit more and look for a decent freezeout.

This is my plan for the future. I enjoyed the experience but a deepstack, freezeout tournament is what I really want to play in.

I think you are on tilt because you are paying too much attention on the results of the hand. Since in online poker, after one bad beat you keep playing on other tournaments as well and forget about it. As long as you play your hand right you should be happy.

If you want more competition and better players, you'l have to look around. Talk to other poker players and ask them where they play regularly. With more experience and wins, keep moving up just like online poker.

If this was your first try at playing live at all, you must have been overwhelmed by a lot of stuff going on at the table and around - I know I was. I can recommend joining a pub league or similar - one season there and you'll be a lot more familiar with the range of people's live styles and even starting to get a hang of body language etc. They're generally cheap buy-ins (and often an optional side-pot or head-hunter), but I've found that because they're qualifiers for finals a good proportion of the players are taking it seriously.

I currently take part in a pub poker league, Redtooth poker, but even that did not prepare me for how LAG some players were.

+1

Same as online. I would fold till I got a decent hand and shove. If you want a more traditional game, you need a buy in. The same play would not be taking place if the buy in was 500 or 1000.00

The first tournament was with friends, to my house entry was 5 euros 1 re-buy without Add-ons and of course in the end we took alcohol for half of the prize:D And the other half were split two best:D
It's fun to play with friends. Of course there must be an entry to make it more interesting, is that most of the later, goes on alcohol but that's ok

playing time in his life in the live tournament) took off quickly, but the experience just picked up after soybeans in the country banned the sport of poker in institutions ((but it is certainly more like online play)

I think the key here is that it was a FREEROLL with REBUYS. It's probably the most spewiest form of poker available. I would definitely avoid the rebuy tournaments if I were you. Like others said go for one with a buy in for a better standard of poker.
