Hi all again..

so as the title suggests i did my first live tournament last night at the local Genting casino and out of a field of 70 i finished 7th in the money.

I even got caught out with Quad kings only an hour in to the tournament which really affected my stack, as i called with 2 pairs.

All in all i am happy with my play when i did shove when i had to i was confident, i did call an all in on the button with 99vsAK luckily my 99's came through just before the bubble i doubled up my short start which i was really needed to do.

1 question though, just before i busted we were 7 handed and had about 5/6 big blinds in middle position and someone raised who was playing a solid game, and i was holding As8s and after thinking about it for a minute i called, was this the correct call? anyway i busted villain was holding A9o and an 8 and 9 both flopped then another 9 on the turn which was a bit sickening because i was confident if i doubled up i would have gone further up in the money.

But anywho for my first live tourney i was surprised i outlasted circuit grinders who some have been playing live for years.

Yea I agree with Joseph, 5bb leaves you no room for any play so any ace will do. Though I would prefer to be the one shoving all in since it gives that added fold equity. But with 5bb it doesn't make much difference if there are decent stack sizes after you who can call.

First of all: congrats on your first live tournament =)
Second, if he was playing solid most likely he is ahead of A8s range raising from UTG, that being said A9o raise from UTG if not that strong of a play, unless he was sure that everyone behind you would fold, wich makes this hand a bluff of a sort.
And lastly you did have 5-6 blinds, you really have no room to wigle so hoping for anything better is hustle and in the end you will have to play some hand which can be worse than A8s. You caught a cooler, that happens.
Agaisn congratulations on first tourney =)

congrats on your first live tourney. they are way more fun in my opinion. but ya 5 bigs you pretty much have to ship A8s. its hard to wait around for better when your blinding out of a tourney. congrats on making the money though that's a bonus for your first live event.

I don't really have a problem with the shove here, but there are some other considerations as to what's the best play.

By simply folding since you didn't have fold equity by being first in you might move up in money by letting one of the other short stacks get knocked out first. For me first in is important.

Unless blinds are about to go up you might get another hand out of the next 6-7 hands that is stronger or with the position of first in. If there are shorter stacks than you that will be the blinds before you this also suggests folding.

Also, what's the spread on payout, mostly at the top 2-3 or more spread out.

99 making the bubble call is always sickening, but seems probably right.
5-6bb calling A8 crushed by UTG range. I think it's better to shove ATC first chance you have to be first in.

losing 2 pair to quad kings make chuckle -- so you have AQ on AKK82 or something? I mean everybody has a pair of kings.

5-6 BB is a shove 7 handed and depends on what position and reads you have. If he was playing a solid game, then I would have maybe folded. A8 suited is a pretty good shove imo with 5-6 BB AND ITM.

I've always like live poker. It seems like less variance because people get do see your donkey plays.

After reis better fold A8s anywhere, but u have only 6 bb's, it's a very short steck, u can shove all in and it be wight, but not always win in the tournament it turns out right decisions:) anyway GG and congratulations :)
