Often times after a tournament starts somebody shoves preflop on the first hand. When they're called, they either have JJ+ or T3o. I'm
1) wondering why they might do this.. Is it just laziness and boredom or is it a strategy?
2) is there some type of benefit in doing this that I dont see? I could understand doing it with AA or KK, and hoping that everyone at the table thinks its a boredom shove which would draw them to call, but other than that I dont know why anyone would do it.

What do you guys think..? Thx
:D

I think it's a supposed calculated risk. Many people don't want an early exit and wont take them on. If there's just 2 in the showdown then the odds (I've read somewhere) of of a lesser hand lucking out increases greatly. Especially as the hand has to go to the river card.

If it's a low buyin mtt they are looking to either grow their stack early the easy way to get a head start or just bust out and rebut or not play. They don't want to take the time to grow their stack steadily, they just want a quick easy double up if they're lucky.

both
you see a tournament that will go for 5-10hrs and think: "I can either double up early to stay relavent longer(bully shorts, stay "alive" while card dead), or bust and be free"
+ it depends on the blind structure, I mean AJo in 10 min blind and 3min blind are two different hands =)

Once I had KK on the first hand in a tourney on the BB, someone shoved his stack he was like Mp +2 , I call and he actually had AA.
That was pretty sick, in a low buyin tournament , you should shove your premium hands, you' ll be likely called

I think a push in this situation to steal the blinds, and only stupid but that push so ka ku someone else can be Valid strong hand and then he would lose all his chips

For microstakes open shoving KK+ in the first levels seems to work well. You will get called by a lot of garbage, maybe almost as much as call 3bb anyway. Not a lot of folding early.

1) As said before, it mostly depends on the buy-in. The type of play that you are describing is more likely to be seen in a freeroll or a micro MTT. In this type of tournaments, where the field of players is very very high, the “bored” type of player (that I would prefer to call a “donk that doesn’t know how to play” type of poker player) has only one goal: double up until he feels confortable with his stack. They really don’t know how to play so they need a stack that they can handle this absence of knowledge. At least for a few levels. In fact they really don’t know how to chip up. Usually you can recognize them buy going in the tournament lobby on the first five minutes of play. They are those who have 4-5 times the tournament average. So to answer your question: yes it is a (poor) strategy.
2) As for the benefits, I don’t really see them. Usually they end up loosing all the chips during the middle stages.

In my opinion, for as much as I hate them in the early stages of the tournament, they are the ATMs of the middle stages. You know that a poor player like that can be easily outplayed.
My advise: let the fish become a whale then start the hunting.

It kind of depends on the buy-in ... freerolls, nothing invested so plenty will push all in with any two cards.
Medium buy-ins and high buy-ins, I have noticed this quite a bit, but I tag these players for later in the tournament. Typically they are only holding chips for better players. If you are consistently ahead, you will consistently win.

Some call it a strategy that they can build stacks with but lose just as fast. They are fun to watch but can also destroy your premium hands when they get there on some stupid 105s crap but that is the game. If you don't like variance stay away from these folks.

I sometimes do that in low buy in games. Looking for a race with my PP or looking for A Rag to call my better ace and hopefully double up or go out early. If I bust ... onto the next game / continue playing one of the other low buy ins I most likely would be playing at the same time ).

a pair of jj is not an advantage to send an all in starting a single game aria with a one to one confrontation
