It's not coincidental. When you play tight, you play fewer hands, which means fewer opportunities to bust or get crippled. And since your average starting hand will be better, your probability of winning the hands you do play is higher.

However, keep in mind that lasting longer isn't nearly as important as winning money. You still need to accumulate chips. Being first out and busting on the bubble pay exactly the same.

If you are playing tight in a turbo MTT you are going to get crushed. Tight is wrong in almost all forms of SNGs, in the vein that you want to be in there raising and taking control often, but not often calling off all of your chips. Especially when you get down to around 18-24 bbs you should not be playing tight, you should be looking for great spots to resteal against agressive foes. Once you are down around 12 bbs or less you should be seeking places to get your stack in with few players left to act or with a strong hand, especially when antes are involved. If you are playing a tournament where your goal is merely to cash or move up a few spots but not to win, you need to move down stakes or reevaluate your game, as you are not playing optimal poker.

It depends on all sorts of things, not least of which is how you're playing the hands you choose to play. Playing weak-tight (check-folding every time you miss the flop, for example) is an even worse strategy than playing super-loose.

Playing tight-aggressive is at least a solid strategy but you should always be looking for spots to exploit your opponent's weaknesses. Adapt your play to the game you're in.

It's like every time i try to play loose i get crushed...so now i play tight. Still only one cash in three weeks, but a lot more top 90 finishes.

Definitely not a coincidence based on your posts.

obviously tighter is better for you.

However, if you are getting set-mining odds you shouldn't be tossing 22-55. It's one thing to fold them UTG, but it's a big leak to not call a raise with these when in late position or the blinds assuming the right implied odds are there. (Which for me are a minimum of 10:1...20:1 preferred....15:1 I probably call more often than not, especially from late position if i think I can possibly win the pot by just outplaying villain without hitting my set....)

Also, IMO It's a leak for you to be folding almost any ace on the button if it is folded to you there....

All that said, dont go crazy loose-- for most players tightening up is probably the right move. Just don't go beyond what makes sense...

Also, once antes kick in, you definitely need to start opening up, as stealing and re-stealing is so much more profitable now. And approaching the bubble, plz plz pl abuse all teh tight players seeking the min cash....
