I created a thread not to long ago titled Baffled, it was basically a venting session as I was getting frustrated with not winning a tourney and was playing a bunch. I started reviewing all my hands and watching some twitch and youtube streams and one thing i found I was doing was I was folding my BB way to often in the later stages of tourneys when you are typically getting a sick price to see a flop barring no huge raises. So today I made it a goal to make more calls from this spot not worrying much about the 2 cards in my hand and it paid off.

I did not win or make a final table but I did cash in 2 of the 3 tourneys I entered. And there were no spots were I was a complete luck box, I did run very good but each time I got it in up to the point I busted out I was ahead with the best hand, a cpl times they didnt hold up but it was not for my tourbament life and was able to recoup. I have to say i was throwing alot of chips away by folding the BB way to often. I am sure you can get into trouble calling to much and you need to balance it but it definately was one spot that was crushing me.

Open up how often you call but also keep in mind, although with more players in that called a raise the pot will be bigger. That makes it seem like better odds to call, but what's not so obvious always is that the chances you will have the winning hand will be thatuch less also. And you are oop to even more opponents.

Calling with sub premium hands, obviously dependent on opponents skill level and your stack size should be limited to a few opponents.

Yes, it works but it must be done correctly. If some of opponents see it through then you should be ready to fold... or they actualy have good hand...

Once the antes start to really kick in I find it hard to fold the bb to a 2x or 3x raise. Usually you are only a 4-1 dog at worst with any random hand. It can be worth seeing a flop if your chip stack allows but I think this is a style change. You need to be doing this most of the time or not at all using pot odds.

yeah early raises should eliminate bad hands from other players, even if it only wins blinds when having AA or KK

defending the BB.... call too little and they will always steal it, call too often then make sure u know where your at in the hand, you want to be defending against ppl who are stealing light, if your at 15-20bb reraise all in a few times to thiefs teach them to stop trying to steal your blinds
if done correctly the thief can sometimes end up shove stealing to stop you, which leaves you in perfect position when you actually have a hand :)

Good stuff Social! I remember your other post when you were upset.. good to see you could find something to improve upon and done so with good results. Defending BB can be tricky, i wish you good luck in your upcoming tourneys =].

Hmmmm lets see if this pays off more in some tournaments. Time to experiment. Thanks for the tips guys, and thanks to the thread starter.

To be useful I need to know at what level are you playing?
Micro level? Medium, Low, High ? :deal:
$1/$2; $25?
<i dnt think it will work at the Micro level.

Biggest thing is dont tighten up the range of cards you play to much towards the end ,maybe some but sont just wait on big pairs or the ak,aq,aj kq hands

using your position is key to keeping and gaining some chips you have to realize each hand and player are different from game to game you must use good judgement and stack size of your opponent to your advantage

I think you have made a good adjustment to your game. All the points about mixing up your play are on track. I think that being able to identify players who are betting strong with those that are betting light to steal is very important to make sure that you don't get yourself calling in bad situations. GL with your adjustment.

I am toying with this as well. What do you guys think a normal Defense of BB% should be at microstakes S&G / MTT's ??

A lot of times you are getting pot odds, but in the end you are out of position and have cards that don't play well postflop.
