Dilemma Time...

Hi all, some of you may be aware of my recent micro stakes success in MTTs. Having profited $25 playing purely freerolls, 55 cent and $1.10 tournies in the past 7 days. This has all been on iPoker's PaddyPowerPoker.

The dilemma is that on PKR, I have around 20,000 poker points. I decided to spend 1000 of these on a satellite 10-man sit and go to stage 1 of 3 to the PKR Masters. The Masters is a monthly (I believe) $100k GTD tournament of which the final table will be shown on PKR TV. Having played the sit and go, I have eventually managed to get through to stage 3 by finishing in top 2 (same prize) in the sit and go; finishing in top 1/6th of field, 3rd out of 37 in step 1 and then having to win step 2 (places 2-6 won $8.25 cash).

My question is, should I go for a Master's seat or for the $45 consolation prize for several placed finishers after seat winner(s)?

Also, does anyone know if I can use my token to split for smaller tournaments? If I qualify for the Masters, can I unregister and split that token into smaller buy-in tokens/use it as a tournament bankroll?

Thanks

James

I'm not too familiar with PKR but I'd imagine you wouldn't be able to split the ticket for the masters to play smaller tourneys. When you play, playing to win would be the best strategy and just hope for the best in the $100k gtd if you win the ticket.

The tokens are indivisible and nontransferable in any poker room, you can not change it, or send to another account or another player... the token is unique and exclusive for u and your tournamente :)

Well, it is sometimes better this way as one has no other escape than to really play it and it might end up with surprisingly good result.
For example on pokerstars I would never use tournament dollars if I win some big token, rather split it for smaller tournaments, only case is if the satellite is running parallel to the tournament, with latereg opened.

I am curious though what would happen if the satellite on pokerstars would by some accident last longer than late registration  - I can only think TD would be awarded.

Sounds like you have some good bankroll management going on. Yes, would be great to split the token, but doubt they will let you.

That said, definitely always go for the biggest prize (big event ticket). Then play the big event and even a min-cash will be nice. Always a good idea to give a higher buyin a shot ever once and a while. Nice way to rocket your bankroll.

Yes, it would be nice. However, people that buy into a $530 MTT are surely going to have a significant edge on me. I'm sure there will be one or two shoving a huge amount of their bankroll on the tournament, but apart from those people and satelliter qualifier? I presume everyone will be a lot calmer than me and more used to playing such big buy-ins? As well as this, most will be a significant amount more skilled, educated and experience than me.

I have played in the PKR masters and although the players are good, there not impossible to beat or outplay by any stretch of the imagination. I satellited into to the event. Play tight early, limp in with your implied odds type hands as the stacks will be deep and there is implied odds if you make a strong hand. Remember though the good players will be playing the same way you do early so give players respect till they give you a reason not to. My experience was interesting. I ended up Itm in the event and lost with AK against pocket Queens.

dont limp pre please, especially with a capped range. if you want to call raises with implied odds thats fine but limped pots are so hard to get paid in because of the small pot size, and wide weak ranges.

Well, if I do qualify, I don't think I'll be doing any open-limping. I will probably limp behind with hands like 89s, 44, etc, but will open with a raise if I am deep enough to feel comfortable playing them.

Playing the Final Satellite right now. First hand, make it 3BBs to call, get 4 callers with 88. flop comes 78T, two hearts. I raise, next person calls, next folds, then lady on the end re-raises. I shove, guy folds and re-raiser calls with only a back door house for the win and a gut shot for the tie and misses!

17 runners, top 2 get a seat and 3rd-7th get $45. So effectively, I may be able to fold the rest of the tournament and get a seat?

You'll likely need to still steal some blinds. You didn't give any info about stack sizes so it's really hard to tell whether you'll be able to fold to the $ or not.

Bit of a problem. Some nob decided to register during late reg, so there are 18 runners. What does this mean? Well the description is '1 in 6 get a seat', meaning for every extra over a multiple of 6, there is a $45 prize. As 18/6 is a whole number, there are 3 seats... and no $45 prizes. What a douchebag...

Oh well, guess its a Masters ticket or finding out I've wasted several hourse playing these sats with no reward.

WISH ME LUCK!

Hey, at least it solves the dilemma as you no longer need to decide on going for the ticket/seat or purposefully busting out for $45.

shoved with 5k, blinds at 100/200 to short stack with 2.7k, he called with AQ i had AK and flop came AQ5. Blinds go up to 125/250, i open shove on button with A8 clubs, AQ diamonds calls, two clubs on JK3A, miss and i get knocked out. What makes it worse is the guy in first hand was down to 500 chips and was limping about 30% of hands. Soul destroying.

Managed to satellite into stage 3 directly with my last 15,000 pkr points. I'll give it another try tomorrow :)

Any final stage satellite tips?

Oh and its a $270 buy-in (the masters), my mistake :)

Satellite > depends on how many get paid but generally speaking, survival > chip accumulation (which should be pretty obvious but in satties you do see sooooo many players making just a ton of mistakes).

$270 entry or $45 cash

if your ROI in the $270 is 0%, on average you cash for $270

your ROI would need to be -84% or worse in the tournament for the ticket EV to be less than $45. it'll be higher than that if you know anything about poker and play sensibly :D

After reading this about 5 times, I finally understand it and find this is a very good point indeed. The only problem is I have one stage 1 token, one stage 3 token and no more poker points. As I am not buying into any stage with cash, this should mean I have 2 chances left to qualify at the moment. I have managed to cash in a freeroll since returning to PKR and cashed, plus earned $2.50 from a deposit bonus giving me a balance of $3.60. I much prefer this site to iPoker in terms of software, bonuses, promotions and tournaments on offer. I mean, you can satellite into the PKR masters directly for only 40,000 poker points! This would probably take me a week to earn playing 6 tables of 4nl.

Anyway, in a perfect scenario, I will get to stage 3 with my stage 1 ticket, play 2x stage 3s with 29 entrants each. Cashing $45 in one and getting a seat in the other.

Wish me luck!

You won't any time soon, lost in stage 3 satellite AGAIN ended up having to shove 4 big blinds in small blind (no limps or raises before me) with JK vs AQ, turned a King, rivered an Ace :(.

Oh well, I ended up earning $1.25 from my deposit bonus thanks to the fact that PKR give points and rakeback for tournaments you've satellited into (unlike iPoker)! Might consider playing the points MTTs, just wait for big pairs and turn 53 points into several hundred or even several thousand.

Anyway, I have some important exams coming up, so if any of you see me on here, on PaddyPowerPoker (unlikely but possible, screen name MasterFelter) or on PKR (individualequal) outside 19:00-00:00 (GMT) each day, make my life a living hell until I turn off the computer and pick up my books.

Wish me luck in Poker and most importantly, my Maths and Further Maths A levels.

Thanks

James
