I just wrote my latest blog piece on the concept of Defending your Blinds in an MTT. Check it out and let me know what you think.

I assumed that you were going to spout the established doctrine about how anyone acting from HJ seat or later should automatically raise any unopened pot to take a shot at stealing the blinds. I was all prepared to offer an dissenting opinion when I clicked on the article, only to find that you had pretty much taken my exact position in regards to defending blinds. Not only do I not feel that it's always necessary to defend my blinds, I also don't feel compelled to always try to steal the blinds

That's not to say that I don't ever defend or try to steal the blinds. Once I feel I've established a tight/aggressive image at the table, I'm often going to open my game up some and try to pick of the blinds once every so often. Likewise, if I notice the same player, that normally limps or min raises from every other position, habitually raising to 4x from CO against my blind, I'm going to eventually play back at them. In both cases, because of having a tight image and not showing a regular tendency to try to steal or defend blinds, I'm almost always going to be given credit for a strong holding.

I'm with you Intense Heat. Yes, stealing the blinds is important, but I just don't feel the need to do a 3x BB raise if it folds to me in the cutoff, nor do I feel the need to defend against a 3x BB raise. However, if I can afford it and I do think the person who is raising me is trying to steal my blinds, I will call from the BB with marginal cards some times just to see if I can hit a flop.

Waddup poker studs and gals I think its really vital to defend blinds especially late in tourneys when the blinds are big there lots of players that like to steal blinds getting u to fold quality hands because you are trying to avoid the bubble so pick your spot and defend your blinds you'll find out more than half the time you'll be glad you did bet safe and good luck!!!

I'm not a big fan of stealing blinds but i do understand its big part of the game and if executed right and against the right players u could find yourself with lots of free chips without seeing a flop and without having a hand bet safe and good luck!!!

Good blog teepack! I agree with both of you! All depends on the scenarios and previous hands in how I play my BB. All these factors I will weigh in as the tournament progresses.

Stealing the blinds is essential for the maintenance of your stack and able to defend your big blind is a very important factor as well in my opinion.

The major thing to remember about defending from the bb is that you will always be OOP unless the raise is coming from the SB and your in the BB , this puts you at a large disadvantage . However if your opponents are often opening in LP and only firing single bullet cbets than defending can be a very profitable situation vs the correct opponents . I agree we should not be defending our BB just for the sake of defending .
