I am interested to hear peoples opinions on how to play in a deep stack tourny vs a normal one. If they have any different strategy methods...:hmmmm:

In a deep stack tourney tou really need to make sure you have a hand that is very close to the nuts before committing a good amount of chips.

Be patient since there is no reason to get crazy in the early rounds with mediocre hands. Loosen up your play when the blinds get higher in regards to your remaining stack. Stay focused since deep stack tournys tend to take longer to get through.

I like deep stacks. They can be a big help to a patient player. But, if players increase the bets and raises to the same % of the exsisting chip stacks, it really doesn't matter. Betting usually starts out at lower amounts and increases quickly as the blinds increase somewhat negating the benefit of large starting stacks.

If you are a very patient and disciplined player, a much better advantage to you would be tourneys that start out at smaller blinds and have longer blind durations. If players are slow, 10 minutes goes by very fast, especially if the room allows a long time for a player to act.

I prefer deep stack.

You can play some drawing hands ina cheap way and double up with that.

i think that is good time to pick up chips early in these things as most people are waiting for the nuts as was mentioned in an earlier post.

Depends on how my table is playing.

this ^
(some differences would be that in early levels you've got good implied odds to play speculative hands in position >> SC's and any pp... hoping to hit big and take down large pot from players who have difficulty getting away from TPTK & Overpr. (big pr's) hands.)

Shouldn't this pretty much always be the case? :D

you just have to be carefull to don't play a lot of hands in a speculative way, because if you're in a bad run and don't hit anything, you might compromise a good part of your stack, just be cool and play a good calm poker

For me deep stack tournaments seem like just an extra few minutes at a particular blind level... just seems like a waste of time to me.

On the flip side, I can wait for my premium hands that way.

You don't need to steal when your deep stacked and only commit with a very strong hand. Also gives you more time to study your opponents and it lets the better players have more chance off doing well.

you can play a lot more hands early in a DS, take more chances while the blinds are low. Just need to be careful and not be stuck at a super aggressive table with players that dont know how to play DS where they are opening pots for 1500 when the blinds are at 25/50

IMO Deep stack (150bb on FT) and super stack (250bb on FT) are the way to go. It does depend on your table though. In Gus book "every hand revealed" he talks about the way to start in these 100bb+ games-and he says sometimes playing tight serves you well, but he prefers to limp in with speculative hands SCs etc. because you might be able to take someones entire stack. And you nearly always have implied odds with deep stacks and small blinds.

My best advice would be to play lots of mtt poker and experiment with both and find which one works best for you. And remember, you should beadapting to the players on your table. Harrington mentions that you want to play in the opposite style from what most of the players are playing.

pokerstars used to have (and maybe still has) a horrific deep stacks tournament for $30+$30: start off with 5000 chips and blinds start at 5/10...and blinds increase every HALF HOUR. It takes two hours to reach blinds of 50/100. To me a tourney like that is a foldfest. I fold everything except high pp and broadways. Because the blinds increase so slowly you can afford to be patient in that kind of tournament, and you can even take a break for an hour and a half early on without compromising your stack much. The negative is that it takes about six hours to make the cut and over 13 hours to finish 1st.

But most deep stack tournaments have blinds increasing every 10 or 12 minutes. In those tourneys you can play really tight in the early stages, then loosen up as the blinds become a more significant chunk of your stack.

Contrary to preconceptions, it shouldn't be against your religion to go all in when you have 5000 chips and the blinds are 20/40. If you have AA or KK you can value bet, but if some idiot pushes, don't be afraid to take them on.

they take a while but the reward for knowing how to play them properly vs normal tourneys gives you a huge benefit over ppl that play them the same.
