Ante-only tourney, four players left, only three cash.
Player 1: 5 antes left
Me: 8 antes left
Other 2 players: both had 30+

I get dealt 88 in utg position and shove, two big stacks call, I bust.

Should I have waited for other guy to bust first? Felt Like I was a donk head because I could have at least checked to see the action ahead of me.

shove was ok i think because in the next 8 hands most likely you hadnt got a better hand

unfortunately the outcome was bad but imho the right call

so better luck next time

I really have nothing to lose by checking though as the first player to act, if other short(er) stack decides to shove (he was utg+1), I can just fold and hope he busts.

At this point, I'm playing to cash. The chances of me coming back this far down are pretty small, and these guys are absolutely better than me (only second tournament ever). The biggest stack was around 80 antes. Both big stacks would call anything because they were trying to get rid of us.

Wrong move imo, the other player will blind out before you so let him take his chances. If you're playing to cash, and you know you're going to get 2 callers, shove with pocket 8's is not the right play because it's a textbook flip (snowmen vs ATC vs ATC is only going to win 49.95% of the time!:deal:) Don't beat yourself up over it though, hindsight is 20/20 and we can't learn/improve if we don't make mistakes ;)

If you think both those big stacks will call you, then shoving here would not be so good because of equity.

If you think only one of the big stacks will call you, then shoving is good here.

This move is absolutely GOOD and right. 88 hand in this tournament stage is very strong. In 4 times from 10 you will have an 8 on the board. Already you can wait for the better hand, but you can be bitten with AK VS 22 with no problem!

odds of making a set or better by the river is 4.2:1, or 19.2% (Less than half of 4/10 times) The chance of an 8 hitting the board has been drastically reduced since Hero holds half of them already. Am I missing something

Bob is absolutely correct in that you will only see an 8 about 19% of the time by the river. For the original poster there are lots of sites that give you the various probabilities which you should check out. Knowing the big stacks are going to call with pretty much anything you should probably be folding pretty much everything here and hoping to outlast the shorter stack.
