I just want an opinion on my play of the last hand I played yesterday in a $280 live tournament. It was a 2 day tournament with 6 starting flights. The field was 869 and paid 81 spots. There was 85 players left and I was very short after losing a flip with AK vs 88. Blinds were 4k\8k, I had a measly 41k. I was in the hijack and UTG opened to 21k. He had about 160k behind and from what I could tell was playing snug. I looked down at 88 and jammed my last 41k. I knew I was getting called but what else am I waiting for being so short? The old me would have insta folded and squeaked in the money. He had 99 and the board ran clean for him. Should I have folded my 88 and waited for a better spot? I asked myself do I want to min cash or possibly have a chance to come back and win this tournament. What is the correct play here???

Correct play is to fold, ICM wise.

Too many hands dominate you, not enough you dominate.

The goal is to make the money to me, was that your goal?

short stacked, jamming with 8s was fine. you can always look back at this hand and think, it was a bad decision because it didnt turn out to be favorable. playing to win is better.

Were you 85th or 75th at the time? Makes a big difference. If you were 75th, you could finish ITM by waiting. 85th would definitely need to shove.

edit: Its live, so you probably dont have that info. Looks like a shove to me.

Tough call, seems like this was a relatively big tournament and any pocket pair with just 41k chips and the blinds at 8k chips is golden. You could have folded, sneaked into the money and then taken a shot, but you didnt do much wrong running your 8's into 9's. Just a touch of bad luck in my opinion, dont think you would have made this thread if your 8's were up against 7's and you doubled up.

if you play in a buyin for $284 u want to cash big . not play to get to 81st. 88 under the gun . next blinds comeing up that leaves u with about 25 k its really a toss up but I would play the 88s if u get a couple off callers with say AK, AQ the more chance u got off getting the 8s throught. just happened u got roasted by a bigger pair

Cooler?

You said he was playing snug, and is raising from UTG. That screams good hand, so I could see where you make a case for folding there. However, folding 8's with 41K would be saying I just plan to min cash

There were 85 left on Tournament ticker, 81 got paid.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I guess I am happy with my decision not being results oriented.
