I think it's normal poker etiquette to ask the chip leader if it's cool to chop. Usually the floor manager would ask chip lead and I think everyone has to agree, not just one person. So what happened?

To be the chip leader is nice but often not permanent. Especially in a live tournament. You learn every step of every action. You should try to be at peace in any situation, whether you have a Royal flush or a pair of deuces regardless assembled combination can not be shown to the opponent no emotion.

If the pool is big, i'd prefer to chop as chip leader, in order to ensure more money

A lot of casino tournaments end up in a chop, and it's an even chop. Usually because the blinds are so large that even the chip leader is only sitting on about 15 bbs.
There really is no right or wrong way to chop tbh. It all depends on whether you feel it's good for you or not. Personally I'm pretty easy to deal with when it comes to chopping, I've seen far to many chip leaders argue it up and refuse only to go out 1st.

You would be suprised that there are many live tournaments where the players chop up the majority of the prize pool at the final table. As you're the chip leader you usually have the power of what says and goes. When discussing a deal, you should consider everyone's stack sizes compare to the blinds. If everyone is still deep, I personally don't like to chop as there is still room to play. When everyone is short, I usually like to chop as you could easily bust in a few hand even if you're the chip leader. Hope this helps.

I pretty much always chop, unless your chip lead is massive. Last week one guy had the other three of us covered and then some so he requested a certain amount of the pool he thought was fair but less than the first place money and we chopped the rest. Usually I would want to chop equally for the reasons stated above about the blinds, but it wasn't worth the risk or time for the small difference in prize money.

It's a strategy that you need to define and then don't think any more in that.

Definitely no required but if it's somewhere you play a lot you're gonna want to haha. People will remember if you don't want to chop then if you find yourself short stacked wanting to chop they'll want to wait you out next time then do it when you're out.

It depends on how big your chip stack was compared to everybody else's, but if you had a huge lead, I would not have chopped without some extra consideration. I assume the five of you each took 20%. If you had a really big chip stack compared to everybody else, I would ask for 30% and let the other four split up the remaining 70%. I think that would be fair. If they refused, then just say, well, let's deal.

Yes, You did wrong!
Its really about how much money you got with your return, but there is no way id split w 5 people left when only 21 people entered, especially when i am chip leader.
You should look at how much money you made when you split compared to how long you played (ie money you made per hour)
If you were chip leader and the blinds were still managable (Most having over 25 BBs left), Then you should have waited until you got down to at least 3 people to offer a split, or the blinds became unmanagable and the tournament became more luck than skill (I.e. Everyone having under 30 BBs left)
Thats generally when i'll take a split, whenever the blinds are unmanagable or if I make a great deal per hour for the time played.
Id say in your case you definitely did the wrong thing, especially because you were chip leader, and because there wasn't much money in the prize pool to begin with, Im guessing only 3 peoiple were to get paid for the tournament and you guys actually paid 5, which isn't good at all.
75X21 = 1575$ you split 5 ways, you all got just under 300$ im guessing with your pay to the casino and other fees. Thats awful payout whne you are chip leader and im guessing you had played for about 3 hours.
If you would have waited until you got down to say 3 people left your split would have been about 500$ each, and with you being chip leader you could have probably waited that one out and then offered a split.
I was in a tournament with under 30 people before and offered a split with a gentleman who was a decent and regular tournament player and he said "NO, its not worth it with so little people in the tournament"
"If there had been more people in the tournament i would split with you"
I am generally in favor of splits especially if the tournament is very long and you are talking about increasing your payout by 1000$ or more just by chopping, then take the 1000$ increase and you wont have to play 3 handed or heads up, But if there aren't alot of people in the tournament, play it out and try to get your moneys worth, especially when you are chip leader.
Good luck in the future.

i dont mind chopping, but if you had chip lead and a couple of the other players had few blinds like 5 and under than no im not chopping. Id still want most money for having most chips maybe get $10 from each player. I did suggest a chop once 3 handed, when i had 3 bb, the older guy had maybe 6 bb and the lady who dominated the final table had 3x what we had together. She said ok the older guy looks at me and says you made out lets chop.
