Chopping

A while back I was playing in my home game. We had a 2 tables, 16 players and paid out top 3. When the tourney got down to 4 players left the 4 agreed to chop the pot. I was already out in 6th. I was not in the room when they made this chop. When I heard what they had agreed upon I said it was not right. This agreement should only have been done when there were 3 players left not 4. My point was the agreed upon payout was for the top 3 not 4. What do you think?

Well if it is a home game the rules arent set it stone and a deal can be made after a certain of playing with 3-4 players remaining. Normally it would be the last 3 but as i said home games rules vary and are more lenient with this kind of stuff, so no big deal there. $th place guy would have had to had a decent stack to for this deal to be done, dont think they would have done it if he was significantly short stacked.

I guess my main concern was for the 5th place finisher and myself possibly. He or I might, and probably would have, played differently if we knew another place was now going to cash.

As Lerts says, that's the problem with playing at home, the rules are malleable. I've seen this sort of thing happen a lot, especially on weeknight games where the game started with stacks that were too deep for the timeframe or everyone has been a bit shy about handing over their cash. I think all you can do to handle it is to specifically exclude it when setting out the rules for your home tourney so everyone knows what's acceptable and what isn't.

You couldn't know such a thing, nor could the player who cashed on the fourth place. Fourth place actually cashed, but it was not going to cash, if you know what I mean...

(Sixth place also could cash, if you suggested and everybody accepted)

House rules apply, make sure you're aware of the house rules, if you're hosting, make sure your guests are aware of the house rules.

You can ask for a chop anytime you want but everyone has to agree if one says no then no deal. After you bust it is too late, the remaining players should be able to chop any way they want and agree to.

The problem with this chop was that the payout number expanded after others were knocked out. I know you can only chop if all agree to but this was different.

I don't see a problem here. You could of asked to chop when there was 6 left. They chose to chop with 4 left.

Not a problem here at all. If the four remaining agreed, that's up to them and if the house allows it.
