In cash games a c-bet is needed quite a lot, and is definitely +EV.

How about tournaments?

Yep, though in tournaments, since we're often way shorter in BB's compared to cash, you really want to think about c-betting before you get to the flop. Like, do i have enough chips to open, c-bet and fold?

OK, thanks. Whether we c-bet will also depend on board texture, presumably, otherwise we would generally be shoving pre-flop?

Yeah same as cash really, board texture and what type of range villians calls with, and how likely he is to hit the flop.

What i'm getting at is that cash we're pretty much always 100 BB deep, tournies you can be 20BB deep and raise/c-betting kind of hurts you so you really want to have a plan before you raise pre-flop(just like cash), with certain hands that are good, but play poorly postflop you might consider shoving. But yeah in some cases it may be better to just fold it, but this is all very general and situational, getting back to the OP, yes raise/c-betting is profitable if you know what your doing :D.

I definitely don't know what I'm doing. My recent experiments suggest that in the freerolls a cbet is a waste of time unless you hit something, as you are going to have plenty of callers anyway. In SNGs people seem to take a bit more notice.

While you can generalize in terms of how often you should c-bet in tournies, it's pretty situational. For instance, some things that can factor into the decision are the styles of the opponents, how many there are in a given hand (the fewer the better), board texture, how well or badly the board texture hits their pre-flop calling ranges, the relative stacks, etc.
