Having been rebourn into poker this week after a long break, I've enjoyed some decent low stake tournys and last night I folded plenty of good looking hands pre flop !!

JJ, 66, AQ and kings with a mid stack around 25k against very low stakes and 40,50,60k players the idea was not to bust out, yet in playing defensive I would have taken them all down in hind sight and sat with a major stack myself.

I got lucky with ace 8 on the bb when a big stack kept stealing my blind with the bb sitting at 2.5k-1.5k I pushed in and survived against 10s - then my final hand 7's I raised to 5k CAUTIOUS raise and only two callers OK flop drops ace,7,6 I'm first to play and hopefully somebody is playing rag ace ??

5k into the pot (bad small bet) bb calls he has 147,000 chips and queen pops out I raise 35k all in, he calls with 9-5 and you can get the rest !!

Looking back my initial raise was poor and left myself open to a poor hand gamble, out in 302nd place 4hrs in 5202 players kinda gutted but a good solid session with no boredom and no temptation to play rags !!

Lessons learned :)

Its always hard to play when you come back, believe me xD
it starts off with you second guessing ranges, then moves on to trying not to be overly agressive, and finally finishing being so Tight that we cant survive

dont worry, you passed up on some good cards, and thats fine if we can get our stacks later without as great a risk, the exit hand, i dont know what your blind levels were, but 4 hours in im fairly sure you dont need a "large" raise to scare off 5 9, any raise should of done the job, and im fairly certain you got it all in on the turn when you had 92% chance of winning
cant really say nothing bad about that :)

Don't beat yourself at the tight folds the fact that you finished 302 out of more than 5K players meant you were doing something right. I am sure you would have made some good folds too that you would not have known because the hands would have run out.
The last hand was just unlucky, yes you could have raised more but you got all your chips in better than 10/1 favorite you cannot do more as a poker player it just wasn't your hand to win.

Cheers both, reading your replies I feel 100% better

I guess the player was playing 9-5 whatever the situ or raise mainly as he was chip dominant with the players left in the hand ! he would still have 100k left even being turned off.

AS said maybe free up a little more, played about 20hrs in 3 days, yesterday i had 2 other runs for 3hrs as well as one stage I had all 3 tournys firing at once all fun !!

What was the situation where you folded KK preflop?

Maybe you played a bit too tight early, but you also have to recognize your own style and not try to second guess your decisions after the fact. If your reasoning was solid with the plays you made, then don't get too hung up on the possible results. As for your last hand, nothing you could have done different except jam pre-flop. And if your opponent called with 9 5 chasing a gut-shot, he probably calls pre-flop anyways. You just got coolered, and believe me, it happens to all of us. Just keep grinding.

What was the situation where you folded KK preflop?

The situation was he had a pair of 7's he raised it, and opponent called with 5 9, he flopped the set on a 7 6 A board, the turn braught out a Queen and he gets it all in, opponent calling with his gutshot
he felt his raise was too cautious but opponent should have been folding on all streets, he didnt which we dont want him to fold, and he hit his 4 outer on the river

straight forward hand where if the enemy hadnt been such a big fish then he takes it on the flop

in actual fact usually when im against somebody making those kind of calls, im usually saying to my GF i found the guy that will either double me up or knock me out, so i hope you encouraged him and didnt tap the tank

Okay...

And what about your KK? How did you play it preflop? In detail, how was the entire hand played?

Can't remember exactly large raise got called by ace 4 and he went over the top all in on the flop with a four hit ace on river after I'd raised initially on the flop.

Playing tonight 5956 down to 419 42k premium hand raises only :) no ace crap Limper's

Good job hope you did well :)
it really seems like your getting used to the way the MTTs work, your getting deep in some of the bigger varience tournaments with like 6k players, you really have to run deep in them and even if your doing well, one unlucky moment can cost you the rest of the tourney

It all depends what you are playing for, you said the idea was to not bust out yet... but by folding hands like KK and JJ you are not picking up the chips you need to survive the upcoming blind levels. I remember the pros used to say, if you want to win you have to be willing to lose. You said you learned a lesson in bet sizing from that hand by betting to small. Keep learning from your mistakes and correcting your play, It will get you far in poker. Glgl in the next game =]

I guess this hand really shows why you don't play 5-8 even with a big stack !! Big raise pre flop.

My exit we both went all in pre flop !! Some seriously big hits come the end, great to see how badly some play when you think there a solid player.
