the cards NOT to play when ahead..

I usually take a patient, tight approach.
When you do succeed at a tourney, even chip lead for a time, how best to proceed? Should I revert to my usual tight form, or should I take chances, play a lot more Q 8, K 9, J 7, junk A's?


We all know what cards we should be playing when chasing the stacks, trying to build ours up. What are the cards NOT to play with the comfort of a bigger stack than you are used to?

I would not play any of those hands. But i play very conservative.

You should continue to play a tight range, but with a big stack you have more opportunity to play suited connectors and set might from earlier positions. Ax suited from earlier positions as well. Don't chase low % draws just because you have a big stack.

I would not play any of the hands you listed. Junk is junk and why waste your hard earned chips. You should play the way you would early in the tournament as long as the players at the table have the chips to make it worth while. Playing suited connectors and suite 1 gap hands, all pocket pairs and descend Broadway hands.

The only real change I make big stacked is I will play alot of suited connectors. Raise preflop and cbet if theres any draw out there. Half the time you scoop the pot right there and if not there is always the chance you hit...

I disagree with so far opinions, If you have a Big Stack you Should play the Big Stack Strategy. "BSS", otherwise you are not taking advantage of your Big Stack as much as you should.
Try to play as many hands as you can and Always Push, double or maybe not, ........
I forgot better just play tigth, It will be better for me.

I would raise with some of those hands in late position if there were no previous raises. I would not be calling with them.

From what I've learned, when you are Deep Stack you should actually play tighter. The reason being that you're more vulnerable because short stacks all around are going to shove against you.
Play super tight when you have the lead and fold if you think they might have you beat.
Do not become a whale.

I would not play any of these hands.

Later into the tournament really depends on your stack size here...

Average stack i dont play any of those hands unless its folded around and i am in the BTN or CO - and there i am only raising K9s or the junk aces. Looking to pick up some blinds, or play pots with inferior hands. You are playing to win, you need to attack those opportunities when they present themselves. For all you know you wait around, finallt catch AQ and run into AK, or someone with a big pair - then you got stacked off anynow.

If your short stacked (20bb or less) stay clear of alllll these hands, they are not a great idea to be investing what little you have left with. Play conservative, look for a good spot to get it all in. Im jamming late unopened positions here with K10s or QJs, etc.

And lastly if you are the big stack it is common knowledge that you should open your range a bit and put pressure on the smaller stacks in play - now this doesnt mean that UTG you should be raising J8 offsuit...but from middle position i would raise j10o or Q10o, and raise almost any suited connectors here starting with 67. Mix up your hands, it throws alot into your range and one minute going to showdown with KJ or K10 the next minute barreling on a board thats only 9 hi and showing up with the straight or two pair in the form of lower cards will leave your opponents wondering exactly what you really are playing.

Can you please explain more on the Big Stack Strategy you would suggest? I would love to play a better big stack style and really want to hear more.

I don't advocate playing as a tight nit style and agree you can open up your range but by playing smart hands.

There are no cards not to play, but there is the study of the game and the game`s maths. Then you decide and move to the next.

I wouldn't use those hands.

I would incorporate small pairs and low suited connectors. Also Ax suited. The hands you mentioned cannot make the nut straight so I would say they're not that useful.

I play those hands in late position and had some success they have to be suited for me to play by the way K9 is one of my favorite hands

At the end of the day, position is going to be the determining factor. Its a lot easier to play and questionable hand in position than to lead out under the gun

I agree with this, and as well as that you should consider how likely you are to steal blinds and antes on a given hand--against many players I think it'd have a higher chance of success with a big stack than a small one.

I don't think I would be playing any of the hands listed, although with a large stack you can open up your range to get in a lot more suited x, small pocket pairs, Ax in earlier position but I would also play somewhat conservatively so not to spew off your stack.
