I think there is something to learn from having played so many freerolls

I think early all ins are so common, that taking even a small 10-15% edge is a very good move. For instance, A-7off going all in over an obvious shoving all in with nothing bet is ESSENTIAL to having more freedom late tournament.

I think this applies to freerolls, rebuys, and especially bounties.

I think being able to tell if it's obvious is easier when watching a couple hands first, seeing who the LAG/Donk player(s) are, then taking the first edge you have against them.

Hands like:

A2-A5, A7-Ak KQ KJs
55-up

Maybe K-10?

Also the theory of having one tech hand in the bunch, like 98s, to sway the variance a little -- as in playing more hands so decreasing v:Dariance over long run by weeding out the varying variable of chance.

Anyone agree?

DISAGREE.

Ya as in loosing sometimes with less strong hands, could change some overdue positive variance into the next time hero plays a small edge

Also those hands do win sometime, with the same dynamic...

Yeah, I don't think that's how it works (not the right reason to widen your range).

Learn what Variance means, though.

For instance, A-7off going all in over an obvious shoving all in with nothing bet is ESSENTIAL to having more freedom late tournament.

If there was such a thing as an obvious shoving all in with nothing bet, this would be a good move in any form of poker.

Unfortunately, even an opponent who is shoving any two random cards beats A7o four times out of ten. It's true that you'll beat that theoretical opponent most of the time, but you are better off waiting for a spot where you are more likely to win, preferably without risking elimination.

I'm cheap enough to still play freerolls with big fields and only a few winners. But I am impatient when I play them.
I will make big bets early when I think I have a slight edge. But it's not because I think it maximizes my chances of winning.
I'd rather be out early than nurse a small or medium stack for an hour, only to face probable elimination in the middle rounds.

Also, it sounds like you have fallen prey to the Gamblers Fallacy. Over the long term positive and negative variance tends to even itself out, but losing a hand does not increase your chances of winning a later hand (except to the extent that it affects your table image).
