I know there's more than likely dozens of opinions on this subject, so I'd like to read about many of them.

I've brought my BR from about $25 to $140 playing mostly 180 player S'nGs, Normal peaks and alleys as is always the case with poker, but never got below my original.

As I study info here and trying different games, I'm starting to wonder if that's the best game. I enjoy it, love it in fact, but is it the best for bring up the cash slowly?

With a $2.50 X 180 player S'nG (and I often play 3 at a time), you have to make the final table to more than double your entry, with the big bucks coming in the top 3 or 4 places. So 1 of 20 players get any decent ROI.

Earlier I was trying 4 X $1.50 Turbo & Hyper STTs, but I'm starting to realize the combination of my mental capabilities and poker skills wasn't doing 4 tourneys justice.

I just played a $7 Turbo STT and while a little slow at times, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Was able to pay better attention to just one table of players and what I was doing, plus, I find the quality of players much better, no donks (at least at the table I was at), seemingly less bad beats and none of this AI with 3-7O bull crap.

So with the $7 tourney, 3rd gets just better than 150% entry back, with the winner getting back over 400%.

With the $1.50 STTs, it would take 5 wins to beat the prize for 1 win in the $7 one.

With STT tourneys, 1 of 3 gets paid, so my thought is until my skill level gets better and I can consistently cash more in bigger MTTs, STTs are the way to go.

Is my logic flawed? What are your opinions?

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not going to get rich doing this, I'm just looking to keep the BR growing as my skills increase.

Thanks.

Jamie

In the answer to your question, your logic is flawed. A friend of mine used a technique that worked out really nice for him. Say he was having a 100 buyins for a 50 cent SnG, he was playing it with 45 people ( Just an example, not sure if you can play with 45 people on 50 cents ). The prizes are lower, because the buyins are fewer, when he builded up his bankroll, adding lets say 20 buy-ins for that tournament he would increase the people he was playing against, to 90, to 180, to 360 and such. Also, when you build it up to 200 dollars you might want to start look for GTD tournaments, like the Bigger 2.20, the Hotter 3.30 and such. Theres even a 0.55c GTD tourney, where the first prize is 800 dollars. Its an all-in fest, tho, with 5-6k people, so its rare to win. Building the bankroll fast means that you hit a big tournament, like the bigger 2.20 10K GTD, I think every sunday there is one, or that you need to win most of the sngs you play and you need to play a lot. You need to find a tourney that you are good at, and keep grinding it until the profit of it ( Say the 1st prize is 3 dollars, where you have 120 it wouldnt matter that much ), then you move on to something bigger. But playing GTD tournaments once in a while can help you increase your bankroll big time. If you win one you will be atleast 1800 dollars ahead. And that risk costs only 2.20$. If you have 200, or even 140, you wouldnt have any problems playing one, once in a while.

Thanks Noobie. I'll try a few of those $2.20s and $3.30s and see how they go, if nothing else, for the experience.

Several weeks back I won a seat to an $11 $1M Gtd tourney on PS and cashed for $30 in that. Nothing huge, but great experience. It's not often I can dedicate that many hours sitting still.

There's nothing wrong with taking some shot at tournaments with big fields. But to count on them as a way to multiply your roll is pretty optimistic. Sure, you can win hundreds or even thousands of dollars by making just one very deep run. But how often is that going to happen?

For example, a $2.20 MTT with a top prize of $1800 is likely to have at least 5000 runners. Numerically, you'll make it to the last 10 one time every 500 tries. Even if we assume you're good enough to have twice the straight numerical probability, that's still just once in 250. And that's just to make the last 10, not to win.

Also, people differ in terms of how easy or difficult it is to work long MTTs into their lives, how well they can maintain their concentration over the lengths of time required to go deep, etc.

With a $140 BR, you're a recreational player. Play what you enjoy. Maybe think of it in terms of how much you win per hour. $1? Less? How much more per hour can you realistically expect just from shifting games? The most likely scenario is not much if anything, and by going to much larger fields, you'll also have to be prepared for more variance.

Whether it's worth it is up to you. But make an informed decision based on considering both the pros and the cons.

I'm a big fan of the Double or Nothing STTs on Carbon. It's not difficult to significantly increase your BR on a daily basis. I use those winnings to enter larger MTTs while still steadily growing my money. If I hit an MTT for a good cash, it takes a nice jump.

Arjonius - Like I said above, "if for nothing else but the experience". If I do make the final table, cool. If not, no biggie loss. And yes, I am definately a recreational player As noted, I have no dreams of getting rich off these (nice dream though :D ), but I would like to see my stack grow as my skills (hopefully) do. I don't play enough tables or for long enough at any given session to make a difference, but my goal would be to see the stack grow 5-10% a week.

Vhyre - I don't play on Carbon, is the Double or Nothing like the Fifty50s on PS?

Vhyre - I don't play on Carbon, is the Double or Nothing like the Fifty50s on PS?

They are similar but different, main similarity is the stt ends once only half the field is remaining, however unlike the Fifty50's where chips have a $ value in the DON as long as you survive you double the buyin (less the juice).

In a DON 55% ITM is break even, in Fifty50 55% ITM could be loosing you lots of $ depending on how you finish stack wise (you need 3300ish chips to double through a Fifty50). Both are played similar in tight fashion, but the goal in Fifty50 is to acquire the most chips for the biggest payday os opposed to just survival as is the case in the DON's.

I wish stars or FTP had DON's, stars did at one time but switched them with Fifty50's quite some time ago. I think FTP should kill the matrix and run DON's, and have suggested it to them on a couple of occassions but they just say they keep it in mind but not in any forseable updates. Wouldn't even be so bad if the Fifty50 existed in 6max but it doesn't in real money although it does in play money????(not sure why)
