hello everyone, im learning to play holdem and my style is tight aggressive. i notice playing this way although effective takes time and patience. in most cases when playing online freerolls i notice the big stacks develope their chip stack much sooner than i would expect from my style of play. my question is what is the difference between my play and others that allows others to develope their chip count faster much earlier in the game than i do which is usually after a sufficient number of hands?

is it that these chip stacks dont play to their card strength n play the players? or if their loose players do they take advantage of more opporunities than i would? im trying to figure out where in their game that i can possibly add to mine, that gives them the credibility to play looser or get involved with more hands but come out a faster winner?

im hopin i get some insight. lol. thanks for the read.

well think of it this way: if a table full of people playing your style (TAG) all get mediocre hands 10 times in a row..who is going to get all the blinds in the meantime? That is where the loose aggressive style comes in, they use your discipline against you and play many pots--some of which they get lucky and get full houses etc.

If you loosen up early, you'll have more opportunities to chip up. But there's a trade-off; you'll also have more chances to chip down. In general, the deeper the stacks, the more you can afford to speculate since you stand to gain a lot by risking a little. This does assume you are able to recognize and get away cheaply from poor EV situations.

The guys who chip up 4x at the start of a tourney will rarely make the final table.

I wouldn't look too much into this at all. Since you mentioned they are freerolls, the people with big stacks likely just flipped their way (and by flip I dont mean with big hands vs big hands) to their stack.

Freerolls are a good way to learn the game and get experience for the newest of new, but once you know what beats what and the basics, there's not much to learn to be honest. Except maybe just more practice at playing all stages of a tournament and adjusting to the deeper levels. You don't need to deviate from TAG or "abc poker" and even if you wanted to, it's not anywhere near an ideal environment to learn anything meaningful by playing lag because a lag doesnt have the natural environment and you don't want to learn/draw conclusions from un-natural environments as it will carry over and things will be much different in real money tournaments.

Just get good at tag, and progressing through the changing stages of the tournament. It'll help you all the way from 0 to $22 tourneys and even $109 buy in sunday "majors" etc.
