So lately I have been noticing in mid-late stage of tournies that small blinds are shoving all in a lot. being on the end of this in the last tournie I played, the small blind jammed on me 2/5 times. I called with a3s and ended up losing to his k5 off.

My question is, what was the correct call in this spot and what is the best +ev play as well as ranges I should call with.

Also when I'm the small blind when / what should I be shoving with. I'm new to this concept and really want to learn more.

mid stage of the tourney is usually not a very good stage to call the shove, unless you are getting really good odds. from your post it seems, everybody else folded and the small blind shoved. 2/5 times usually makes it a bit frustrating hence your decision to call and then it turns to a coin flip. Waiting for a better hand to call is usually the way to go unless your stack is less as well.

This depends on the size of your stack if you are the small blind and has more chips than the big blind, play aggressive against him to steal the blinds if it show reaction, just fold your hand

DeepFloyd, first my opinion is:

BigBlind - If all table go fold, and you the SB go all in, most of time i go fold, only call if i have a big hand like AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AQs the rest should fold. But if you has more chips than him, and you have info that he is a loose player, you could call with more range of hands. But you need to consider the informations about the villain, your stack, he stack, and if he is trying to put you in pression/steal or if he has really value.

SmallBlind - You need to consider your stack and the stack of big blind ever! if you want to steal the blind, if the BB has many chips, he will defend the BB, most of the time, and if he has 15-25BB maybe he will fold, and if he has less than 10BB he probabbly re-raise you, going all in, with any hand like Axs, Axo, Kxs, Kxo, QJ, JT, pockets pair, suited connector, maybe connectors, so you need to consider your hand for steal blinds from who has less than 10BB.

And a good think to do, when you are the SB, is analyze the BB if he is tight, loose, agressive.
