Most league leaderboard events do not have you lose points when you bust out early. I believe the ones you are referring to are specifically the pokerschoolonline leagues. (I've never heard of anyother league that subtracts pts. from your total for poor placings in tourneys... more often they take your best 10 tournaments, or they drop your high score & low score, etc. etc. and just award pts. for placing).
To get a decent answer for your question I think you really need to post it on the pso forum 'or' find some members here on Cardschat who also participate in those tournament leaderboards. (I know there used to be some threads on here with information on them).
Personally I have no clue what strategy you need to employ as I've never participated in them. Maybe try doing a thread search on here & you'll be able to hook up with some others who know the answers/advice for you.
As far as I can remember, blinding down & outlasting/surviving had more value then accumulating chips & going for the win (similiar to how a satellite plays) but like I mentioned, I really don't know the answers you're looking for.
