If you could recommend 1 poker author to an advanced beginner-intermediate player to study his/her books who would it be & why?

The reason I am asking is because i'm looking to improve & feel that, rather than taking on board 10 board different opinions on the game I feel it might be better for my game to study one authors outlook on the game and then branch off. I mainly play tournaments, but would be open to cash authors if their material is better?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Have you read David Sklansky?

Try browsing through the poker section of used book stores, to see if you find anything you like. Each player reacts differently to each author, you never know which author will be best for you :)

I'd start with the Harrington on Holdem books. They focus on tournaments, and since his style is on the tight side, they're relatively oriented toward building a solid foundation rather than trying to implement a lot of advanced concepts all at once.

For tournament poker, Ill go for Harrington. For cash game poker, Ill go for Doyle Brunson.

harrington is a really solid foundation to start from

I think his recommended play is a little too tight to be profitable these days....but first you learn to crawl, then walk, then jog then run.

I'd consider Harrington "walking"

I also liked the "kill phil" book...I'd liken that to "jogging"

and "kill everyone" I'd liken to jogging/running.

as always, thanks guys. My main games are sit & go's & tournaments. so Harrington seems to make sense! Although I have a naturally aggressive style & heard Harrington preaches the opposite, so not sure whether i'll be able to relate to him. Heard some good things about Ed Millers books, but they all seem to be for cash game players.

A good cash game book author isn't going to be relevant to playing MTT's or SNG's.
Suggestions above > Harrington is the way to go imo.

IF you're mostly playing SNG's, then your best bet would be a SNG book (not Harrington's tourney books).
Collin Moshmann's SNG Strategy is a decent book.
Phil Shaw's SNG book is decent too.

Both of these are getting a bit dated but they're still decent reads (I'd sway towards the Moshmann book though if I had to pick between the two).

If you want more info. on poker books, try using the forum's search feature... you'll find a bunch of threads on the topic.

Harrington preaches a classic tight aggressive style....it is not the opposite of aggressive at all, it is just on the very tight side.

I doubt any poker book in existence preaches a passive style except in rare specific situations

Don't mistake tight as meaning not aggressive. Harrington's style is basically TAG. He plays fewer hands than average (tight), but is aggressive with the ones he does play (meaning he seldom limps and that when he has options that are close, he tends to favor taking the initiative.

I read a number of differing authors. Keeping in mind that each has a unique perspective, and their styles differ I can take what resonates with me and experiment some. Most poker books have at least something to offer that would help, the trick is picking and choosing what works for you. I think following one particular theory or style make you a one trick pony. Be as unfathomable to your competition as possible.

Annie Duke's Decide to Play Great Poker is hands down the best book I've read! I would strongly recommend to anyone serious about playing poker

Two books not listed that are must reads are wining poker tournaments one hand at a time by pearljammer, apestyles, and rizen and the raisers edge by elky. Those 4 books will blow your mind about tournament play. They have really helped my game and I assure they will help yours.
