Bars are a good introduction to live play.

I started on regular local multi-table bar tournaments which led to national multi day finals.

That experience really paid off when I got the chance to play major tournaments.

Free-rolls in the bars are really excellent to help launch your tournament games. You get to try different strategies for nothing. It helped me play a whole lot tighter and be patient with my spots. Plus one league here in St. Louis area supports the open bar league that has national games worth lots of money.

Yes I play in a bar too. It's really improved my game as well. There's nothing like getting live tourney experience free. I'm going to the bar poker open championship in Vegas in June. Yay!

That's awesome, I might have to check into some in my area and see what is offered.

Sounds like some very nice opportunity you have there in the USA. I really like the idea, but unfortunately i have never heard of any bar freerolls running here in germany. :( You could simply find a live poker tournament at local casinos, but the buy-ins start from 50€ and more. So it's quite too expensive for my bankroll and is way too high limit for someone who is not experienced at live poker too, just like me. So i am staying by online poker tournaments.. You are very lucky, that you have this opportunity to train your live poker skills for free!
p.s. Although i have to admit, i been watching several times such live games at casino and found out there are quite many weak fishy players in there. So i really hope my bankroll can afford it soon, because i think the field is amazingly weak there for such limit, comparing to online poker and can be very profitable to play there. :)

The bar freeroll that I have participated in have had the starting chip count at like 10 big blinds with allowing up to 5X add-ons which where bigger than the entry chip count, each add-on that is, and unlimited rebuys. So not only were these major donk-fest but if you didn't want to invest any money you were looking at starting a tourney as the low stack that needed to shove or fold essentially.

Still this was a good place to start your live poker play to get the jitters out of the way and such. Your bar's freeroll seem a bit better experience all around tho
