I was at WinStar last weekend playing in the $175 Deepstack tournament. Our table had the same 10 guys at it for a couple hours and we were all having a pretty good time and chatting it up some.

Well after awhile some players were knocked out and the seat to my right opened up. A white guy (i'm white too BTW) who was about in his early 60s sat down. A few hands go by and this guy gets isolated with a younger (I'd say in his late 20s) black guy who was seated 4 seats to my left.

The hand went to showdown with the older guy making a big bet on the river and then the younger guy called him. They both had the same hand and the pot was chopped. The younger guy made a statement that he knew the older guy didn't have him beat by the way the hand was played out and that is why he called.

So then out of nowhere the older guy starts trash talking the younger guy saying that the younger guy made a terrible call. He went on to say "you don't know shit about what I would have had or how I would have played it". The younger guy was like "Hey I was just making a comment on how the hand was played and it seems as if your story didn't make any sense so I called".
Older guys says, yep you got lucky there just keep playing like that and I'll have all your damn chips pretty fast...

Well, then it went on for like 5 more hands... I was sick of it and was just about to tell both of them off, but it was 1 minute to break so I just kept to myself.

First time I had ever seen that at a table....

Do not listen to the talks when someone trying to intimidate. mostly players loose control when trash talk. better be safe and you can block them and move on with the level.

I'm surprised you don't see much of this. Where I play in Florida, trash talk abounds. I try to ignore it and not get involved. Ruins my focus paying attention to those type of players.

Online is so much better in that regard. Just turn off the chat, plug in to some tunes, and blissfully ignore the Trump (er ... trash) talk.

I guess you see why people wear headphones at the table, lol. I've seen people get to the point of fighting.

Trash Talk

Hi Smokewood,

Whilst i appreciate that situation was not good for you to witness, it is tame compared to examples i have seen in live play at my local casino and i am sure you and other members may have seen worse behaviour.
I have often been baited at the table and i have always just ignored and just played my cards the same way regardless, often it explodes when i have knocked that guy or girl out - some bad losers in life out there!
Let your cards and silence do the talking, if the tournament is managed well or casino floor - they should deal with this.

Play well and maintain integrity and coolness :)

Regards

pirateglenn

Agree this is very standard - you will see much worse in no time. Often both players are wrong and still convinced they are correct. :D

You did well to stay quiet. There is nothing you can say that would be productive.

Never educate your opponents but use any information you can gather against them.

Good luck!

We rarely notice such situations, but they have a place to be especially if it is a cash game, in the morning it happens that they start throwing chips at each other... and in the days when this game was born not rarely all ended with shooting, as armed cowboys did not know how to lose.

Hi.
I never pay attention to the conversations of players during the game. It distracts me. I do not care what others are writing in chat. My main goal is to win the tournament.
Good luck.

Trash talk is so not cool in my book, i know we all have our own personalities, but there is no need to insult anybody ... Keep calm and good luck :)

There are many who think they are the best at poker
and they like much about everyone else how they play, do not worry if it's never answered, I'm sorry for it.

I'm surprised you haven't seen more of this kind of stuff, Smokewood. I'd say every third or fourth session of mine, at least two guys start bickering and get into it one way or another. Pretty commonplace in the poker world as egos run high!

Yeap.

I've seen worse in a freaking homegame.

nothing to be surprised.

also it's great for the game having two tilted players.

It is a simple conversation between two players that was not going to get further poker players mostly talk about how a hand was played as if the other simply did not play or did not draw conclusions

Oh yeah. I have seen this a few times maybe 3-4 times where it gets heated. I seen someone slam the table and get kicked out the casino. It can get pretty bad... but keep to yourself and play your game. These people is what makes the game fun sometimes. especially when you take some chip from them!

I ran into someone on pokerstars 2 days ago. Who would call anyone a donk or an idiot if they beat him, no matter the hand played. And let me tell you that he played with 82s offsuited lol. Anyways he made me turn off the chat, as I was about to loose It and was about to respond with negative comments myself. I just reminded myself that it was just a game to have fun and cooled off listening to some Bob Marley hahaha.

I'v heard of guys getting followed home and brutally beaten in the garage after a live trash talking session. I talk tough online but live is way dangerous.

Banter is fine - anything offensive or physical I have a problem with - need to think positive at all times at the table
