The game is a NL Hold ‘em tournament.

The blinds are $100 and $100 (1st level of play), one player raises $200 to $300 total. Another player, without vocalizing anything, mistakenly throws in 5 $100 chips in the same forward motion. Is this a raise to $500? The dealer told me“no because it would be a string raise” – that’s when I called the floor. The floor ruled no and allowed player #2 to take back $200 and simply call the original raise.

I guess a better way for this hand to play out with consideration to the half-bet rule is if the second raiser had thrown 4 $100 chips into the pot with no vocal action – would that be halfway to a legal raise and thus count as a re-raise to $500?

I believe that it was a legal re-raise in this situation. As far as the hypothetical 4 $100 chips part, I don’t know for sure but again think that it is a re-raise to$500. Clarification would be nice; I thought I was going insane when the floor allowed a call.

You can see what the TDA rules, Robert's rules et al say, but be aware that they have areas where they don't match exactly, and any house can have its own rules. It's up to the players to know what applies at any given casino or site.

Seems like a raise to me. If it's clearly one motion I don't see how it's a string raise.

Announce your raises, people!

I think it is definitely a raise, and IMO a bad decision by the tournament director. As for the $400 , I'm not quite sure...

Haha but I agree with baudib though...speak!

Yep…I’m absolutely positive that the 5 $100 chips in one motion is a raise and I was overruled by the dealer and the floor! The dealer was new, and just didn’t want to be wrong. He said it was a “string raise”clearly just to throw something out there and get me to shut up – it was in no fashion a “string” anything.

As for the 4 $100 chips example, I can understand house rules. I do know that the half-bet rule only applies to limit games, since this was a no-limit tournament I don’t know the ruling there – but I still think it’s a raise.

I realize this happens from time to time where a TD rules incorrectly, hence the second opinion option, but this was way over the top. When the dealer explained the situation to the floor he never once mentioned the “string raise” as he had told me – just an inexperienced dealer that wanted to maintain authority –which is good in a way I guess, but…
